Gili Islands Holidays

An irresistible island archipelago

With white coral beaches, excellent snorkelling and no motorised vehicles, this archipelago of three tiny islands off the coast of Lombok is one of Indonesia’s best kept secrets.

Boasting a rustic, bohemian vibe, the Gili Islands are renowned for their amazing diving opportunities, laidback attitude and stunning, kaleidoscopic sunsets. One of the best ways to explore the islands and their abundance of natural beauty is by hiring a bike and pedalling your way around, stopping off to soak up the sights and sounds of the Indonesian jungle, before relaxing with a cocktail.

Combine your stay with a trip to Bali or Lombok to extend the luxury; or why not create the ultimate paradise itinerary and visit all three destinations?

My favourite hotel is the Ombak Sunset Hotel on Gili Trawangan, as the hotel name suggests, sunsets here are not to be missed. Make sure you head down to the beach in plenty of time to catch the sun go down and take an obligatory sunset swing selfie – the photos look incredible.

Gili Meno is well worth a visit. Even if only for two or three nights as an add-on to Bali or Lombok. Why? It's the ultimate escape, almost like stepping back in time. Beautiful beaches, no roads, no cars, only horse and cart and bikes to get around

Frequently Asked Questions

Gili Island beaches are renowned for their beauty, swaying coconut palms, and spectacular sunsets. Gili Meno beaches have a romantic and remote feel while Gili Air has both lively and serene beaches. Gili Trawangan beaches are generally more developed with bars, surf schools, and beach parties. Due to the abundance of coral around the Gili Islands some beaches may be a little sharp so a pair of sea shoes is recommended.

The quickest way to get to the Gili Islands is from Lombok with a fast boat service operating from Teluk Kodek harbour to Gili Trawangan and Gili Air, taking around 15 minutes. You can also get a fast boat to the Gili Islands from Bali which takes around two hours. The fast boat departs from both Serangan harbour in Bali (most convenient for the beach resorts on the south of the island) and from Padang Bai harbour (most convenient for the resorts of Ubud and Candidasa).
