Your holiday in Lombok will establish you on the mainland of Indonesia’s popular Gili Island chain. This stunning paradise is known for its vibrant culture, superb dive spots and white sand beaches overlooked by majestic Mount Rinjani.
Lombok has long been overlooked in favour of its sister island Bali. While this is changing, Lombok still retains the tranquillity that first brought travellers here. The island is home to the Sasak people, who practise a unique mix of Muslim and animist beliefs. You’re sure to love learning all about this remarkable culture; from the elegant Gendang beleq dances to the spectacular Bau Nyale festival.
Lombok holidays: a quiet island paradise
You will find Lombok to be a paradise if you enjoy trekking. Trails can be found along the coast and into the interior, winding through valleys, rice paddies and beside towering waterfalls. The highlight is Mount Rinjani, Indonesia’s second highest volcano and one of the nation’s most astonishing sights. A vast lake is cradled within the caldera, surrounded on all sides by verdant greenery. It’s a two day guided hike and an experience you’ll never forget.
The waters around Lombok are some of the most diverse on the planet. Strap on a snorkel and spend some time getting acquainted with stunning coral reefs populated by thousands of species of tropical fish. If you like scuba diving then there is no better location to practise, as some of the world’s best dive spots are situated right on your doorstep. You can take a day trip to nearby Gili Meno and explore Jason deCaires Taylor’s Nest - an iconic underwater sculpture.
