Thailand is a beguiling place to begin your journey. In Bangkok you’ll settle into the rhythm of Southeast Asia, exploring the city’s waterways, temples and vibrant night markets. The legendary warmth of the Thai people will charm you as you dip your toes into this ancient culture. Climb aboard the train in Hualamphong Station, where you’ll instantly be whisked away to a world of sensuous luxury. Outfitted with cherrywood detailing, fine fabrics and en suite facilities your compartment will be a home-away-from-home as the train rolls on day and night, crossing paddy fields, river deltas and jungles.
World-class chefs staff the dining car, preparing western classics with an eastern twist. A full bar serves crisp champagne and ice-cold beer as the landscape changes around you. In the evenings the train’s piano bar comes alive with the sound of talented musicians, while in the mornings you can take breakfast in bed while watching the view from your own personal window. Start your Journey
Bangkok
Arrive at Bangkok International Airport and head to your hotel. You’ll have the next three days to spend at your leisure. Take a walk along the Chao Phraya River, explore the Grand Palace and visit Wat Pho – home of the vast reclining Buddha.
There are grand shopping malls in Bangkok, home to modern shops, designer labels and more. Alternatively, pick up a bargain at the floating markets.
In the evening you can head over to Chinatown, which comes alive with the scent of popular dishes such as pad see eiw, kluay tod, and som tam as the sun goes down.
Eastern & Oriental Express
Today you’ll meet the Eastern & Oriental Express at Hualamphong Station, which is located in the centre of the city. You’ll settle into your compartment in the early afternoon for an evening departure.
Dinner will be served as the train rolls gently through a landscape of rice paddies and pretty villages.
Eastern & Oriental Express
After taking breakfast in the dining car the train will halt at Kanchanaburi on the edge of the River Kwai. Disembark for a boat tour, while a local historian provides a talk on the history of the famous bridge and the Thailand-Burma Railway. Having been built by Allied Prisoner of Wars during the Second World War this railway has a harrowing past. You’ll also visit a war cemetery and a museum for an insight into the area’s part in the war.
Return to the train for lunch and continue your journey through stunning Asian landscapes.
Eastern & Oriental Express
Your morning will begin with breakfast in bed as you approach Pedang Besar, the town marking the border with Thailand and Malaysia. Brunch is served as you pass the old colonial town of Butterworth.
In the early afternoon the train stops to enable you to explore the royal city of Kuala Kangsar. Here you’ll visit the stunning Ubudiah Mosque and the Royal Museum of Perak. You’ll also stop off at the city’s oldest rubber plantation on your return to the train.
Eastern & Oriental Express to Singapore
On your final day, the train will pass through Johor, with its vast palm plantations, before crossing the Causeway Bridge into Singapore.
Disembarking at Woodlands Train Checkpoint you’ll be taken to the city centre, where you’ll check into your hotel.
The rest of the day is at your own leisure. Singapore is an intriguing city with plenty to explore. You might like to take a stroll around the old Colonial District, which is home to some great parks and museums.
Singapore
Spend your last two days in Singapore at your leisure.
Enjoy world-class shopping on Orchard Road and visit the hip Kampong Glam district. Try a Singapore Sling in Raffles’ famous bar, tuck into a delicious variety of cuisine, whether its at Michelin-starred restaurants or at local street stalls, and visit the malls. There’s also the Gardens by the Bay, which is home to some incredible species of plants and wildlife.
Finish your journey with a drink at the spectacular Marina Bay Sands Hotel, which is an architectural marvel that towers over the downtown area. Toast your amazing experience as you take in the city’s bright lights and huge shipyards from the rooftop.
