Best Time To Visit Thailand – By Season
Winter: November to February. The weather is cool and pleasant. The sun is out, and it is the best time of the year to visit Thailand’s beaches and embark on water-based activities. Temperatures are mainly in the 20s and low 30s C. It’s cooler in north and central Thailand and ideal for sightseeing and exploring.
This is when you can visit some of the best sites to see in Thailand such as the UNESCO World Heritage listed cities of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai.
Summer: March to June. Temperatures rise in March and remain hot till June, with April the hottest month. Events such as the Songkran festival lure visitors during April though the crowds taper off in the subsequent summer months. If you are looking for a quieter experience and don’t mind the warmer temperatures, the period from May to June is the best time to visit Thailand. Expect sporadic showers in June.
Wet season: July to October is the monsoon season, but the islands and beaches on the east coast, such as Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, see plenty of sunny days in July. The country sees the highest amount of rainfall from August to October. If you want to visit Thailand’s national parks and witness its waterfalls and rivers at their prettiest, this is the best time to visit Thailand. Monsoon travel is an exciting option for repeat visitors looking for something different.
Best Time To Visit Thailand – By Region
Central and North Thailand: If experiencing the country’s rich cultural heritage in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai is the main focus of your itinerary, then the best time to visit Thailand is between November and February. The weather is dry, and temperatures are cool, allowing you to tour markets and temples in these cities in comfort.
East Coast Beaches: The beaches on the Gulf of Thailand see perfect weather conditions from December to March. While April and May get very hot, June to September is a good time to visit Koh Samui and its neighbouring islands. Be ready for some rain showers in October and November, the wettest months on the east coast.
West Coast Beaches: The islands of the Andaman Sea have an extended monsoon season that runs from May to September. The best time to visit these islands on the southwest coast is from November to April.
What To Pack For Thailand?
Beachwear – Thailand is known for its beautiful beaches and gorgeous islands, so pack swimwear if you plan to spend time at some of the country’s charming coastal towns and islands. While you can wear bikinis and tankinis at the beach, it’s preferable to cover up once you step into the main street or town. Pack flip-flops or slip-on sandals, a sunhat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Natural fabrics – When off the beach, shorts, T-shirts, and long and short dresses work well in the main tourist destinations. Pack clothes made of natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, bamboo or water-wicking, quick-drying materials. These work well for Thailand’s humidity. When travelling through smaller towns and villages, dress modestly.
Temple visits – Male and female visitors to Thailand’s temples should wear clothing covering the knees and shoulders. Long dresses, long pants, and modest T-shirts that cover the shoulders and upper arms work well in such situations. Carry a shawl or buy a Thai sarong—it always helps in a pinch.
Hikes – If city tours and sightseeing are part of your itinerary, pack a pair of good walking shoes. Long-sleeved T-shirts, hiking pants, and hiking shoes are required for hikes. Don’t forget to throw in bug spray or mosquito repellent, though these are also readily available in Thailand.

Hear From Our Experts
“Apart from the most upmarket restaurants and shops, Thailand is very much a cash-based economy so your credit card won’t be much use on a day-to-day basis. Make sure you carry enough Thai baht in small denominations to cover your everyday purchases, especially if you are travelling to places where ATMs are few and far between, such as the more remote islands in Thailand.”
“If you ever find yourself on the vibrant isle of Koh Phangan be sure to taste the island’s specialities called No Names. These spicy little fritters are served with a delicate dipping sauce and are perfect with a cold Chang beer or a coconut and pineapple milkshake – bliss.”
