KwaZulu-Natal is the home of Zulu culture, countryside, and both coastal and inland game reserves, plus fields of sugar cane that thrive in a subtropical climate. Enjoy a blend of history, culture, action-packed outdoor adventures and beach-based relaxation, in one place, on KwaZulu-Natal holidays.

With rolling hills scattered with rugged rock formations and golden beaches stretching over 200 kilometres along the glorious coastline, holidays in KwaZulu-Natal are abundant with opportunities to explore South Africa’s natural beauty as well as the traditional culture and tribal settlements of Zululand. This province boasts two World Heritage Sites, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the majestic Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. Explore the savannahs and wetlands on a safari in search of the Big 5 (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino), plus more, or enjoy many different hiking trails, over escarpments and river valleys, stumbling across bushmen paintings over 2,400 years old.

Kingdom of the Zulu

For intriguing and humbling history lessons, venture to the KwaZulu-Natal battlefields where the Zulus, British and the Boers fought throughout the 19th century. If you’re looking to soak up more knowledge, a trip to the Ohlange Institute in Inanda is highly recommended, known for having more history per square centimetre than anywhere else in South Africa. Finish your holiday with a visit to the Victoria Street Market in Durban, a sensory explosion where you can sample African cuisine and find anything from traditional artwork, Indian spices, bags, jewellery, traditional clothes and much more.

To continue your adventures, fly from Durban to the Greater Kruger National Park to experience a South Africa safari. Our Destination Specialists are ready and waiting to help you plan the perfect KwaZulu-Natal holiday. Give us a call today to discuss your ideal tailor made holiday.

“If you’re keen to catch the best of the dolphin and whale-watching opportunities in KwaZulu-Natal, time your trip with the annual Sardine Run during June and July. Huge shoals of sardines attract a feeding frenzy for all kinds of marine life, making this an incredible spectacle to observe.”

Events & Festivals

The city of KwaZulu-Natal offers a huge selection of fun events held throughout the year that can be enjoyed by everyone. Here are a few of our top suggestions.

Durban July Handicap

A South African thoroughbred horse race held annually on the first Saturday of July at Greyville Racecourse in Durban. A great excuse to dress up, quaff champagne and place a few bets.

Sani stagger endurance race

One of the best endurance races in South Africa, from Sani Pass to the Lesotho border in the Southern Drakensberg. Runners have two options: a 21 kilometre half marathon or 42-kilometre full marathon.

Sardine run

Every year in mid-June hundreds of thousands of sardines make their annual migration along the KwaZulu-Natal east coast resulting in thousands of seabirds, dolphins, sharks and whales following the sardines along their journey.

Local Cuisine

KwaZulu-Natal’s cuisine reflects its rich history with African, European and Indian influences, you’ll find a huge variety of different foods and flavours to tickle your tastebuds. Here are a couple of tasty recommendations.

Bunny Chow

Bunny chow is a very popular Durban dish consisting of a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with curry.

Durban Curry

Authentic Durban Chicken Curry is usually made with chicken which is simmered in a spicy gravy made with garam masala, finely chopped onions and tomatoes, curry leaves and coriander.
