Best time to visit the Maldives – By season
The weather is always balmy in the Maldives. Daytime temperatures hover between 28°C and 31°C, and water temperatures range from 28°C to 32°C. What distinguishes the high and low tourist seasons is the rainfall the islands receive.
Dry season: December to April is the best time to visit the Maldives because it’s a period of low humidity, clear skies, little to no rain, and perfect water conditions. The best resorts are booked months in advance during this period, so you will have to plan up to six months before your proposed travel to get the accommodation of your choice.
With only one luxury resort per island, the big advantage of choosing the Maldives for a holiday is that it never feels crowded, even during the peak travel season. Couples and honeymooners will especially appreciate that most high-end accommodations on private islands maintain exclusivity and privacy even during the busiest travel periods.
Wet season: The wet season runs from May to November. During this period, there are frequent bursts of heavy rain, though there is a good chance of sunshine-filled days too. You will sometimes experience strong winds and rougher seas which may affect visibility underwater. Humidity levels are higher during this time. If you plan to travel during this season, we recommend resorts in the Southern Atolls as they have lower precipitation levels.
The wet season is a good time to visit the Maldives if you are looking for quiet relaxation and special offers on accommodations.
Best time to visit the Maldives—By activity
Snorkelling and Diving: Water conditions are at their best from December to March. Water temperatures are around 30-32°C, and visibility is spectacular, allowing for amazing snorkelling and diving excursions. The waters are calm with low to no winds, making it ideal for beginners.
Surfing: May to September sees the biggest swells and presents incredible surfing opportunities.
What to pack for the Maldives?
- Swimwear: Two to three swimsuits. After all, there are innumerable beaches to explore and plenty of water activities you can participate in. Note that women can wear bikinis and single-piece swimsuits at their resorts and bikini beaches. If you venture to a beach on an island where local Maldivians live, however, you will need to wear swimwear that covers the shoulders, knees and midriff. Packing a couple of coverups is always a good idea. For men, swimming shorts work fine.
- Clothing: Similarly, women need to wear modest clothing covering their shoulders and knees when exploring towns and villages inland. Maxis, long skirts, flowy pants, light T-shirts and shirts in linen and cotton work best. For men, casual shirts and trousers are recommended. Of course, you are free to wear shorts, strappy tops, dresses, and the like while on your resort island.
- Footwear: Pack flip-flops, waterproof sandals, and flippers if you want, though all resorts rent or provide equipment for snorkelling and scuba diving.
- Other essentials: Tote bag, sun hat, sunglasses, and sun protection cream are necessary. You may want to carry your own dry bag for your electronics when you go on diving or snorkelling excursions, though most operators are well equipped with such amenities.
- Rainwear: Pack a rain jacket if you are travelling during the wet season, though resorts will provide umbrellas.
