San Diego Holidays

Famous for its great weather, San Diego has an abundance of gorgeous beaches and all the charm of a historic city to go along with them. Wonder the different neighbourhoods on a San Diego holiday and discover each area’s unique personality. Nature lovers can take to the trails to see some breathtaking views the city has to offer and relax on one of its many stunning beaches.

Take a stroll and learn about the interesting history of the Victorian-era buildings of the charming Gaslamp Quarter; both impressive and beautiful in equal measure. Explore Old Town, the area that was home to the first permanent Spanish settlers in California, making it the birthplace of the state. There’s a vibrant atmosphere in Old Town, with Mexican restaurants, boutiques and markets. On Saturdays, it’s full of the sounds of live music from the Old Town Artisan Market, which also sees stalls of jewelry and art works for sale.

San Diego enjoys 70 miles of coastline, so there are plenty of beaches to choose from. Hit the water at La Jolla Shores, laze around in the lagoon at Torrey Pines State Beach, or walk along the shore at Del Mar City Beach, admiring the dramatic cliffs and tidal pools as you go.

Turn your San Diego city break into a multi-centre holiday and explore the rest of California, stopping off at nearby Los Angeles and Palm Springs, or discover more of the United States’ west coast, starting your journey at San Francisco and stopping at laid-back cities, small beach towns, and hidden coves and beaches as you make your way south to San Diego.

  • Old Town

    Old Town

Widely considered the birthplace of California, Old Town San Diego is the site of the first settlement of the Spanish and boasts a lively atmosphere, with authentic Mexican restaurants, markets, art galleries and boutiques. Check out Whaley House, believed by many to be the most haunted house in America and then hop aboard the Old Town Trolley to enjoy more of the sights that San Diego has to offer.

Though the temperatures never drop too low, Winter season in San Diego can be quite rainy. In May and June, you can expect low hanging coastal fog, though this does usually clear up by midday. In late summer, you won’t find much fog but the temperature does soar. Autumn is an ideal time to visit, when temperatures are comfortably warm and the sun shines nearly every day.

"Go for Sunday Brunch at the Hotel Del Coronado, otherwise known by all the locals as the Del. They serve an incredible feast in their Crown Room."

  • Comic-Con International

Head to the infamous Comic-Con and meet with comic book fans, listen to guest speakers from the comic scene and discover new releases. Comic-Con is held every April in San Diego, with fans travelling from all over to attend, so it’s definitely worth a visit.

  • San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival

Held annually each November, the San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival is a week long celebration of food and drink. It brings together lots of wineries, craft beer and spirits, and chefs from the local area. Don’t miss the Grand Tasting Finale!

  • Warm Handmade Tortillas

San Diego’s used to be part of Mexico and is home to many hispanic people, so you’ll find many tell-tale signs of the area’s Cali-Baja culture, not least in its cuisine. Head to Old Town to sample some pretty incredible handmade, warm tortillas.

  • California Burrito

This speciality is taken seriously in San Diego and you’ll find them in any taqueria in the city. You can’t miss this burrito, consisting of a big flour tortilla wrap filled with guacamole, carne asada, pico de gallo, cheese, and, making it a true California Burrito, a bunch of french fries.

  • Fish Tacos

Another manifestation of Mexican influence, Fish Tacos are a must-try. Given the city’s waterfront location, it’s not surprising that seafood features in some of its best cuisines. In this case, whichever type of fresh fish is available is fried and placed in a tortilla along with accompaniments such as avocado, pico de gallo, cabbage, cheese and crema.
