Fabulous service, Ozen really delivers its promise

Jersey, United Kingdom

The all-inclusive package was great with 4 massages included, a minibar of food and drink that was replenished daily, a decent wine list and good food at a choice of restaurants. Our room 303 – a ‘Wind Villa’ on the water with an 8 metre private pool and access to the reef from the decking area on our balcony. The villas on this side of the walkway had a great sunset and privacy ok. Food: All the restaurants serve very high-quality food, we felt in particular the Indian (Indo Ceylon), Chinese (Peking) and M6m (underwater) food quality and presentation was on a level with very top restaurants around the world. The sheer range of the breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets at Palm covered many tastes and catered for both vegans and vegetarians very well. We didn’t eat at Joy de Vivre but we enjoyed a drink at the bar there on many evenings where there was a DJ playing music. We also ate at the lunchtime RAW bar – a sushi bar by the spa and gym on a few occasions and it was excellent. The underwater restaurant which had sounded gimmicky was actually superlative, greeting you with decent, actual caviare and Tattinger Champagne, and all the subsequent food and beverages of a very high standard, with amazing undersea views day or night. Wine: We were very pleasantly surprised at the wine options after previous experiences in the Maldives with all-inclusive where we had opted to pay extra to upgrade to a better quality wine. Here we had no need. It was good for example on an all inclusive list to see a Premier Cru Chablis, and there were Champagnes from major houses. Accommodation: we had a water (wind) villa with n 8 metre pool as mentioned above, which we were able to swim laps in. We opted for this because of previous experience at a different Maldives resort where there were two pools but no adult only option, so there were kids playing in both the pools all day long. The private pool option works really well here. The room and the terrace over the water were excellent, but we were surprised, for the money were were paying, not to have USB points by the bed - something now pretty standard in high-end hotels. The service was exemplary and utterly charming: from the warm initial welcome off the 45 minute speed boat from Male (nice to be quicker than sea plane although sea plane is fun!) right up to the extremely and equally warm departure the standard of service throughout restaurants and bar was faultless. All were really well-staffed and speed and attentiveness of service is in our view, unrivalled. We'd love to mention a whole long list of the great staff, but two in particular, the waiter, Anu and the Indian restaurant chef, Hari, were both beyond brilliant! We like the culture of the staff requesting feedback often, but not in any obtrusive way. Equally the standard of service to our villa was excellent. There is a superbly well-equipped gym among the many facilities on offer at Ozen with lovely, knowledgeable staff who were happy to give regular one on one training for no extra charge. We used this every day. The spa experience was great, with 4 massages included – we tried Swedish, Detox, and Balinese – all uber professionally delivered and a relaxing couples room where you look through a glass floor at the tide and fish. Bliss. Our only minor negatives to this brilliant holiday were that we didn’t get introduced to the manager which was a shame in our two week stay, we would have expected a personal communication other than the standard invite to a cocktail party (maybe we are unusual but we go away to somewhere like the Maldives to have a total chill and relax - not to have to mingle and make small talk to a bunch of strangers, whoever nice they might be! And our room could do with a bit of maintenance to the balcony…. paintwork of pool and windows, doors. Although the rooms were only built in 2016 it did feel like it had been exposed to some weather and needed extra care. But this is a very small niggle, not a complaint. In conclusion, this is an excellent resort, faultlessly run and we’d confidently recommend it to anyone wanting the ‘Maldives R + R experience.’ If we rated it alongside our stay in LUX 3 years ago, we would say that LUX had a more sleek finish to it, everything was immaculate there, and LUX is a bigger island. The staff at Ozen were perhaps more accommodating and the all inclusive package better, particularly with the wines. Both had good choice of restaurant - with LUX you book up as you go - at Ozen we were given our itinerary for the two weeks restaurant bookings right at day one, we could change it and did as the dinner times did not suit but it could feel a little structured. The accommodation at LUX was better maintained and better looking though the private pool not as big. Airport: This is the one downside. Do not expect a 5-star experience here. The airport at Male is truly shocking. Hotels and the tourism industry should put pressure on the airport to improve dramatically as it taints the experience hugely. On our return trip it took us almost 2 hours to get through the security process, moving from one queue to the next. Many of the staff were abrupt and rude and some openly hostile – a shocking contrast to the delightful and friendly staff of Ozen. It leaves a bitter taste to send holidaymakers home with that experience. Unfortunately, this airport experience would no doubt make many think twice about visiting again. I strongly recommend the government deal with with as a priority - and that they have a word with some of officials and tell them that departing visitors deserve a friendly smile not a surly scowl.

THE honeymoon destination

Rawtenstall, United Kingdom

Spectacular place. It was our honeymoon - like so many of the other visitors to the resort. We were greeted at the airport by the speedboat that took us no fuss to the jetty. 45minutes was the travel time. Our butler (Adam) was superb and very helpful - booking all our excursions for us (fishing, dolphin watching, Chinese restaurant, Indian restaurant, romantic beach meal). Food at each of the restaurants was amazing, as was the buffet / a la carte. In order of our preference it was; m6m, buffet, Chinese, indian (order mild spice here if you are used to a western style rogan Josh). We were lucky enough to visit the m6m restaurant at 13:00 for feeding time to take photos, as well as have a meal there also at night. We just asked the Bar supervisor. All the personnel at the resort were very friendly, and so hard working. We will definitely be revisiting.
