Family Fun

My kids had a great time at OBLU. Plunge pool in the water villa was a blast to them and the marine life around the island is simply amazing. There were also good options fro F&B. Will definitely consider coming back again!

CONSTRUCTION WORKS CLOSE BY

Liverpool

What a terrible shame for Oblu and their business. A short distance away, which is clearly visible from one side of Oblu is the construction of another ‘huge’ new island. This doesn’t seem to be common knowledge to people who have booked Oblu until they arrive and are in total shock, as we were. Choosing an island is mind boggling enough and I thought I had researched well. Our agent Travelbag did not inform us of any construction work going on. I am interested to know of anyone who may have already informed Travelbag of this construction work? I rely on Tripadvisor reviews regularly and I never spotted anything about this. We booked a deluxe beach bungalow on the other side to the construction site but the sight of it and noise still affected our holiday. I would have cried if I’d have woken up each day to that view of cranes and diggers after saving for this holiday for so long and having had such a difficult year. We did not come to the Maldives to look at anything like remotely like it. The views from the adult pool (in our opinion) are horrendous. Also the ‘Just Grill’ restaurant and the beach bungalows further down are all having to look at the large cranes and building equipment and listen to the banging and scraping of the large machinery throughout the day and well into the night. Oblu on a previous review deny the noise but it is most definitely an issue. The noise in the evening travels across even more than the daytime and along with the flood lights at night spoils the whole ambience of the tropical experience expected when visiting the Maldives. We have been told that these new islands are popping up all over so it would be a good idea for anyone to ask the question regarding construction nearby to wherever you are planning to book. We have been before to the Maldives a long time ago to a 3 star island called Lohifushi which wasn’t all inclusive then. We thought this time we would try somewhere different and a better star rating - AI package so we have no bill at the end of our stay. Despite this construction nearby we had a wonderful holiday. Giving Oblu 4 out of 5 rating on here we think is very fair as the works were the only downfall. Lucky for us we had a lovely room (232) with a beautiful view on the other side. As long as you are aware of the construction work beforehand, it gives you an informed choice of what you want to do. We felt duped to say the least. Oblu apparently are not obliged to inform anyone. Oblu try to do their best and offer people free upgrades (subject to availability) to those who arrive and are not happy about it. It seemed to be full capacity when we were there and some people were ‘waiting’ to see what they could get and how soon they could be upgraded to the other side when people checked out of the deluxe beach rooms and lagoon rooms. ARRIVAL Upon arrival we received a very very warm welcome. Music and drums playing as we got off the speedboat. The boat was new and modern which was a lovely ride from the airport. We had no wait at all. Staff here are amazing can’t do enough for you. Lovely people, a credit to Oblu. Their service all over the island was excellent and we couldn’t fault it. ROOMS Rooms very modern, spacious and trendy. Our room attendant Ziyad was superb, best we have ever experienced and we have travelled all over the world. Deluxe Beach Bungalows were the best. 201 to 229 had lots of vegetation and trees in front of the rooms which made them very shaded from the sun and views of the sea. Sunbeds were also quite close to each other. 230 to 245 the beds were a bit further away from each other and felt more private - these were the ones further towards the pier at the opposite end to the lagoon villas. Lagoon villas seem cramped together. No room to move the sun beds around. And noisy with the sea underneath. Tea coffee and kettle in rooms with plenty of bottled water daily Mini bar has 2 beers each day (replenished each night) and plenty of coke and sprite but if u want more beers and bottle of wine in the room u have to pay a small upgrade fee. We took drinks back to the room from the bar no problem. Life jackets in the room for snorkelling. Most people wore them. I felt much safer with one on. Umbrella, rain macs, decent Oblu Flip Flops and a Beach Bag Beach towels, hairdryer, shampoo (bring separate conditioner for your hair ladies ! The water makes it like straw) shower gel, body lotion and cotton robes supplied - towels changed twice daily if required. Bedding changed on request. Bathroom is partially open to the elements - very open plan. English plug sockets here so no need for adapters DINING Outside dining on the decking was wonderful with the resident singers on at lunchtimes - very nice. Food here is excellent. The Sri Lankan chef Dasan was fabulous, made hubby a lovely veggie curry one evening and his Hoppers on Fridays are amazing. The egg man at breakfast is superb. Poached eggs perfect every time! Omlettes really good too. The seafood night on Mondays is excellent - prawns were amazing along with fresh tuna on the grill. Lamb Moussaka was my favourite and also the Pasta Station Food around the pool by Mr Fry available every afternoon at 4pm although we didn’t try it. The Grill restaurant was ok but we had been spoilt with food at the buffet each night and felt fooded out. All inclusive drinks very good - decent wine choice, Red - chianti, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot White - Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, sauvignon blanc Sangria, white and red, Prosecco We never had to wait for a drink anywhere. Bar service was very good. Evening entertainment was adequate Football on the big TV so kept up with Premier League Singers good and a DJ. Some nights varied with local entertainment Nice pleasant atmosphere in the bar with Dart board, pool, ice cream and popcorn machine. We found it difficult on the odd occasion in the bar being non smokers - it’s not fair to us non smoking people to have to breathe in other people’s nicotine or electric cigarettes Difficult I know when there are no rules here. We always found somewhere to move to. Yoga and aqua aerobics daily. Marine education talks, Diving lessons available Decent enough small gym. Snorkelling is fantastic Oblu snorkelling equipment was good and free to hire. We invested in a ‘Seawag’ mobile phone underwater pocket for our iPhone from the shop here. Best $40 we spent but they are much cheaper on amazon to take before you go. The underwater footage we have with it is brilliant. Also if you are not confident with snorkelling there is a full face mask you can buy before u go. A lot of people had them and I wish I had taken one. Beaches and whole of the island very well cared for 24/7 SPA - looked really beautiful and relaxing - we were kindly shown around by the lovely staff there but we didn’t try any of the treatments. If we had known about the construction work before we travelled, we would have cancelled Oblu and chosen a different island - because we were on the deluxe side we did enjoy the Oblu experience. They do have a 5 star island which looks amazing. Sengeli. Probably out of our budget! Make it a priority to be on the deluxe side and you will have a really nice holiday!
