Best time to visit Malaysia – By region
Temperatures in most parts of Malaysia range between 28°C-32°C, throughout the year. The only factor to consider while deciding the best time to visit Malaysia is the amount of rain each month receives.
West coast – Penang, Langkawi, Malacca
The best time of year to visit Malaysia if you want to head to Penang, Malacca or the island of Langkawi is from November to March. From March to August, this region sees increasing levels of rainfall. However, it is still possible to holiday here as long as you are prepared for an odd shower or two. The region sees its heaviest rain during September and October, and it is best to avoid travelling to this side of peninsular Malaysia during those couple of months. The best time to go snorkelling on the west coast of Malaysia is from November to March.
East coast – Redang, Tioman and Perhentian Islands, Terengganu, Kelantan
The islands and towns on Malaysia’s east coast experience heavy rains from November to February. During this time many resorts and hotels close, as the intensity of the rains is much higher than on the west coast, and the seas are choppy. The period from March to October sees this coastline basking under a warm sun, with plenty of dry days and conditions perfect for a beach holiday.
Kuala Lumpur: The best time to visit Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur, is from December to September. Showers can still occur during these months, especially from March to May, and in September. However, they are typically in the form of short rain spells that provide relief from the city’s heat and humidity. The city sees its heaviest rain in October and November.
Cameron Highlands: With temperatures in the low 20s, the Cameron Highlands provide a welcome escape from the high humidity in the rest of Malaysia. It is a great place to visit year-round. The region sees the most rain from September to November, which means the scenery is at its greenest and lushest in November. If you prefer dry weather conditions, the best months to pick are January and February, as well as June and July.
Malaysian Borneo: Clear waters and dry weather conditions from March to October, make it the best time to visit the island. The months of June, July and August are high season here. However, the months outside this period provide enough opportunities for spotting orangutans and snorkelling in crystal clear waters.

What to pack for Malaysia?
Malaysia’s near constant heat and humidity call for lightweight clothing made of natural fabrics such as cotton, bamboo and linen. While the dress code in Malaysia’s bigger cities and popular tourist destinations is fairly liberal, it is best to wear modest clothing that covers the shoulders and knees, especially in smaller towns and offbeat destinations.
Casual clothing works best in Malaysia, so pack comfortable tops, T-shirts and shirts, skirts, dresses, shorts and loose trousers. If you are visiting the beach, take a sarong along with your swimwear. Also, pack your sunglasses, sun hat, sunscreen and comfortable footwear. If snorkelling is on your bucket list, consider taking snorkelling gear and swim shoes.
Pack quick-dry T-shirts, hiking pants, and sturdy trekking boots for outdoor adventures. Rainwear is a must, no matter when you travel to Malaysia. Carrying mosquito or insect repellant is a good idea when visiting Malaysia.
