Known as one of Jordan’s most iconic locations, Petra is a famous archaeological site in Jordan's southwestern desert. A UNESCO World Heritage site, one of the seven wonders of the world, and the set for the Indiana Jones films, Petra is a magical, mystical place that will take your breath away.

Petra was originally built as a stop on the trading routes that stretch across the Middle East, from China to Rome. However, Petra quickly became a notable city in its own right. The Rose City sits in the south of the country and is without a doubt one of the top must-see sites when visiting the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Its awe-inspiring architecture carved entirely into the face of the surrounding cliffs has fascinated people from across the world for over 2,000 years. Your holiday in Petra would not be complete without a visit to see The Treasury, an impressive, Hellenistic temple carved into the rock face of the city. Petra Monastery is another iconic monument that we recommend you visit, along with The Siq, a narrow gorge, over half a mile in length that is flanked on either side by soaring, 80 metre high cliffs, surrounded by stunning scenery.

Explore the ‘Lost City’ on your Petra Holidays

Wadi Rum is a protected area known for its spectacular desert landscape, majestic sandstone mountains, dunes and canyons. If you are feeling adventurous, why not book a cycling tour, taking in the spectacular desert scenery? Take a visit to the Dead Sea for a day of relaxation, scenes of natural beauty, and luxurious natural spa treatments.

With so many things to see, planning your trip can become overwhelming, so why not give our Destination Specialists a call today? We’ll help you to put together the perfect Petra holiday.

Where do we start with Petra? Famous for its rock-cut ruins dating back to the Nabataean era, The Rose City is quite simply, the most staggering archaeological site in Jordan. When you leave the siq, the narrow entrance of the ancient city, you’ll get your first glimpse of Al-Khazneh and its famous pink façade. You’ve seen it in on the front of travel magazines, now it’s time to see if for yourself.

Petra at night

We’ll let you in to a secret, one of the most moving ways to see the city of Petra is by night. You’ll emerge into the famed Al-Khazneh, known as the Treasury, and it will be aglow with 1,500 candles. It’s a spectacle you won’t want to miss.

Petra Archaeological Park

This vast and unworldly landscape of pink-hued rocks across Wadi Musa has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. When you hike the various trails around this 264,000 square-mile site, you’ll understand why. Look out for the Roman amphitheatre which dates to the 1st century AD.

Events & Festivals

Festivals and events are wonderful to include during your Petra holiday, offering a glimpse into the country’s authentic culture and traditions.

Petra Desert Marathon

The Petra Desert Marathon is a full and a half-marathon that is run annually starting at the Street of Facades in the Ancient City of Petra. The route leads punishingly up near-vertical slopes and crosses patches of open desert in the neighbouring vicinity and finishes in Wadi Musa.

Local Cuisine

Get a flavour of the local culture through your palate during your Petra holiday. Here are a few of our favourite foodie dishes.

Mansaf

Mansaf consists of tender meat layered with wafer-thin flatbread and aromatic rice. The meal is usually served with toasted nuts, more flatbread and jameed, a tangy yogurt sauce.

Falafel

Falafel are soft balls of spiced, ground chickpeas. They are often served with bundles of fresh mint, raw onion and tomatoes, alongside piles of warm flatbread.

Kanafeh

Kanafeh is a traditional Middle Eastern dessert made with shredded kataifi (filo) pastry dough, soaked in sweet, orange blossom syrup. They are then typically layered with cheese, or other ingredients, such as clotted cream and nuts.
