When most think of Agra, or indeed India, it is the grand domes and pearly walls of the Taj Mahal that come to mind. One of the world’s most fantastical - and famous - mausoleums, the Taj Mahal lives up to every expectation. But an Agra holiday has more than one jewel in its crown. The city’s stint as a Mughal power-centre left a generous splattering of ancient forts and elaborate tombs, and for visitors, a rich history to explore on any Agra tour.
The Taj Mahal’s shimmering walls, architectural finesse and exquisite interiors bring millions to Agra, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, each year. Built by the Mughal emperor Shan Jahan, as a mausoleum for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj is as captivating as the love story behind it. Wander the manicured lawns of Mehtab Bagh park for breathtaking sunset views or join a Taj Mahal tour through the glittering splendour.
Discover turrets and terraces on your Agra tour
A domed and turreted landscape makes up the city of Agra, set on the banks of the holy Yamuna River. Every turn promises lavish courtyards, ornate masjids and cavernous bazaars. Enchanting craftsmanship can be found at Agra Fort; a masterpiece in marble and red stone, and one of India’s most impressive Mughal-era forts. Likewise, the Sheesh Mahal palace dazzles with its mirror-mosaic walls.
Wander the city streets to get to experience the local community, join cycling tours and learn about the struggles of some incredibly brave and resilient Indian women at Cafe Sheroes’ Hangout. Head to the labyrinthine city bazaar to satisfy every craving, whether it’s for delicious Indian street food, exquisite marble goods or beautiful leather handicrafts.

“We recommend visiting the Taj Mahal for sunrise, as this time is less crowded and much more peaceful, and the sun rising above the domes and turrets is a sight to behold.”
Events & Festivals
With a vibrant cultural history, Agra is the perfect place to explore Indian history. Plan your Agra holiday to coincide with the Taj Mahotsav festival to immerse yourself in Agra’s ancient traditions and celebrations.
Taj Mahotsav
An enthusiastically celebrated festival, the Taj Mahotsav is an annual 10-day event from 18-27 February, celebrating the rich cultural history of Agra. It begins with a grand procession, reminiscent of the magnificence of the Mughal-era - with brightly decorated elephants and camels, drum beaters and glittering dancers. The festival gives Indian craftsman a platform to showcase their talents and there are numerous dancing and singing performances.
Local Cuisine
Agra is home to the rich, spicy and aromatic Mughlai cuisine; dishes developed in the medieval Indo-Persian cultural centres of the Mughal Empire. Ensure you sample some authentic dishes during your Agra tour.
Petha
Petha is a transparent soft candy, made in Agra from the ash gourd vegetable. There are numerous different varieties and flavourings - such as coconut or nut - of the much-enjoyed sweet.
Paratha
Paratha is an iconic dish of Mughlai cuisine, and Agra is well-known for its specialities. Parathas are made with pan-fried flat wheat bread, stuffed with fillings such as potatoes, cauliflower, carrots and cheese and spiced with traditional Indian flavours.
