Iconic and Historic

The city of Agra is synonymous with the Taj Mahal, and it’s a well-deserved legacy. The iconic, white-marble mausoleum sits on the banks of Agra’s Yamuna River, and it’s one of the seven wonders of the modern world, the highlight of any Golden Triangle tour, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Built by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, in memory of his late wife, the Taj Mahal’s intricate façade and exquisite interiors bring millions of visitors to the state of Uttar Pradesh every year. As any past visitor will testify, rather than simply living up to the reputation that precedes it, the sheer splendour of the place will exceed all your expectations – and then go on to exceed them a little bit more.

Just two miles from its majestic centrepiece, meanwhile, lies another feather in the city’s cap – Agra Fort. A masterpiece in marble and red sandstone, this is one of India’s most impressive Mughal forts.

Tiptoe from one lavish courtyard to the next and you’ll discover ornate masjids, or mosques, cavernous bazaars and gem-embellished palaces at every turn. The Shish Mahal palace will stop you in your tracks – inside, its walls glitter with the fragments of thousands of tiny, mirrored shards.

Top Tips from our Experts

“The Taj Mahal is obviously a must see for anyone visiting Agra, but be prepared for how busy it will be.  It’s more than worth the queues, though. Try to get there early, the main tour buses arrive at about 9am so it’s best to get there before then for a short queue and witness the sunrise over the domes.”
