Holidays in Edmonton might just surprise you. In the heart of western Canada’s meadows, Alberta’s capital is one of Canada’s youngest and fastest growing cities - an up and coming hub of doers and pioneers.
Edmonton is a wild metropolis and is home to much more than North America’s largest shopping mall. It’s Canada’s fifth largest city and is now an epicentre for culture, art, outdoor adventure, sustainability and contemporary places to eat.
If you have a curious mind for Alberta’s heritage, head straight to The Royal Alberta Museum (RAM). It’s the largest museum in western Canada and one of the top museums in the country, located in the artistic district of downtown Edmonton. Discover artefacts and specimens that tell stories of the province’s heritage, people and environment. You’ll find 5,300 exhibits, although you might not get through all of them, and stores showcasing local artisanal products and souvenirs.
Edmonton holidays: the perfect escape to the great outdoors
Adventures and lovers of the great outdoors are in the perfect place. Edmonton has a huge outdoor culture and if you ask a local, they’ll tell you that the river valley is the true heart of the city. It’s 22 times the size of Central Park in New York. Follow the endless hiking trails to explore the massive urban parkland that slices right through the metropolis.
Visit Fort Edmonton Park and discover the Gold Rush era, with exhibits spread across 158 acres. On the south bank of the North Saskatchewan River, the park is the largest living history museum in Canada. Board old steam trains at the entrance and travel inward to the fort and continue your adventure on foot. Find and ride horse drawn carriages, streetcars and automobiles from the rush era.
If you’re in need of some retail therapy, you’re moments away from North America’s largest shopping mall: West Edmonton. Take your pick from over 800 stores and services, nine attractions and more than 100 places to eat. You’ll even find an indoor water park, an ice palace and an 18 hole miniature golf course.
Edmonton locals are known for their enthusiasm for creativity. Artistic visitors shouldn’t miss a visit to the eclectic Whyte Avenue, downtown. Along a four kilometre walk, step into the creative minds of artists where over 500 visual artists bring their work out into the streets. It’s an outdoor studio and gallery that winds down several blocks and explodes with life, creativity and colour. Many of Alberta’s hidden artistic talent are discovered here, along the Whyte Avenue Art Walk.
