Our California road trip will take you to some of the area’s top sights. Begin in the lively city of San Francisco before taking in the dramatic beauty of the Central California Coast. Next are the emerald landscapes and towering mountains of Yosemite National Park before you finish your holiday in the famous wine region of Napa Valley.

The best time to enjoy our San Francisco, Central California Coast, Yosemite and Napa Valley multi-centre is between April and September. This allows you to enjoy the warm sunny days, with April and September bringing slightly cooler temperatures for those who don’t like the heat.

Begin your multi-centre in San Francisco, where you can spend your days taking in the top sights and attractions. Visit Pier 39 and see the sea lions, take in the views on the boat trip to Alcatraz before learning its fascinating history and cycle over the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

Next is the Central California Coast, which is well known for its rugged landscapes which lead to the Pacific Ocean. It’s also home to some beautiful beaches, head to San Simeon where you'll be able to spot elephant seals. Yosemite National Park is a vast expanse of glorious wilderness just waiting to be discovered. Relax by the lake, take the hiking trails and bask in its truly spectacular views.

Finish your multi-centre in Napa Valley. This fertile region is one of the most famous winelands in the USA. It’s home to rolling landscapes, emerald green vineyards and some excellent opportunities for fine dining.

Day 1

San Francisco

Explore San Francisco’s steep streets by foot or by tram. It’s home to some excellent restaurants and trendy coffee shops which feed the glamorous residents. You’ll also find unique architecture, with tall houses lining the sloping streets and looking out over the river below.

Spend time taking in some of San Francisco’s top sights. The Golden Gate Bridge is a must and can be driven or cycled over for beautiful views and an iconic picture. Head to the other side and make the most of National Parks and plenty of opportunities to explore the USA’s natural landscapes. A visit to Alcatraz offers incredible views of the city from the boat as you cross. You’ll also find a fascinating history to be discovered in this former prison, where Al Capone and The Birdman were famously incarcerated.

San Francisco is also a great place for foodies. It’s home to pretty waterside eateries, trendier restaurants in its steep streets and fresh produce which can be picked up from the markets.

Day 2

Central California Coast

California’s Central Coast is well known for its rugged charms. It’s home to some of the west coast’s most beautiful scenery, including the famous Big Sur.

Along the Central California Coast you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get out of your car and explore. The wide roads are ideal for easy driving, and you can take in stunning views on either side of you. To one side are the dramatic cliffs, white sandy beaches and glittering seas of the Pacific coast. On the other are the wide open farmlands and luscious interiors of California.

Stop off to relax on white sandy beaches, where you can walk for hours and take to the waters for a quick dip. In local seaside towns you’ll find melt in the mouth seafood dishes, while the countryside gives way to vineyards where you can enjoy a delicious tipple. There are more difficult cliff walks, and opportunities to feed tame squirrels who sit in the car parks waiting for visitors.

Day 3

Yosemite National Park is one of the USA’s most breath taking. This vast expanse of wilderness is home to emerald green valleys and towering granite rocks and mountains.

Spend your days taking to a hiking trail, on your own or with a guide and explore the secrets of this vast park. You’re bound to stumble on spectacular views, glittering lakes, thundering waterfalls and more along the way. Yosemite Valley is known as having some of the best views in the park. Look through Tunnel View and admire El Capitan, the Half Dome and Bridalveil Falls.

Spend a day in the crystal clear waters of Tenaya Lake. It’s fed from the fresh ice and snow from the mountains above and offers a chance to cool off as you admire the luscious surroundings. Book a kayak and explore the lake further, or simply lie back and soak up the warm Californian sunshine.

Day 4

Napa Valley

Napa Valley is the USA’s most famous wine region. This luscious, fertile valley is home to a huge range of vineyards which have been around for years and offer a taste of the local produce.

Explore Napa Valley on the wine tram and hop between famous vineyards. Stop wherever takes your fancy and listen to the region’s history and facts as you travel along the picturesque roads in between. Alternatively, pick your favourite vineyards and take taxis in between.

At each of Napa Valley’s vineyards you’ll find a delicious range of bottles to try. From rich reds to a light sparkling bottle and crisp whites, there’s something for everyone here. Expert sommeliers will take you through the vineyards’ different processes before allowing you to try the finest varieties along with delectable local produce. You’ll find plenty of fine dining establishments, serving up fresh seafood from the nearby coast, as well as succulent meats and fresh fruits and vegetables.
