Stockbridge lies amid the picturesque Berkshire Mountains in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, about a two-hour drive from Boston. The Berkshires are a popular holiday destination, particularly for lovers of the outdoors. There are a number of hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing trails here, and plenty of birds to spot. The town of Stockbridge was founded in 1734. Today, it is primarily known for being the former home of painter Norman Rockwell. The Norman Rockwell Museum houses over 500 of his paintings. Chesterwood, the former estate and studio of sculptor Daniel Chester French, is a National Historic Landmark. The town is steeped in history. The Red Lion Inn was founded in 1773 and past guests include three former Presidents, Bob Dylan and John Wayne. Merwin House is a well maintained 1820s Federal-style home, while the Bidwell House Museum offers a glimpse into life here in the 18th century.
