Newport is a popular summertime holiday destination in Rhode Island’s Aquidneck Island. A seafront harbour filled with shiny yachts and cliff tops with opulent old mansions, it harks back to a stately era with its well-preserved architecture and historic landmarks. Newport’s cliff top Bellevue Avenue is home to magnificent mansions, châteaux and sprawling old manor houses built by America’s rich industrialists in the 19th century. The architecture, seaside location and rare antiques stored in many of these lovingly restored mansions are definitely worth viewing. The Elms, The Breakers, Rosecliff and Rough Point are just some of these fantastic heritage estates. The Newport Car Museum and the National Museum of American Illustration also make for interesting browsing. Newport has continued to pay homage to its old maritime heritage by hosting the popular annual sailing regatta, the America’s Cup.
