The list of positives are just too long

Singapore, Singapore

We were rather hesitant to book the hotel as it’s really not cheap. This is easily the most pricey stay we have ever been. But really no regrets at the end of the day. We booked the all inclusive package as we knew there was nothing much to do outside of the hotel at this side of the island, and we would spend a lot of time here in the hotel. Having seen the “extras” guests need pay for AI at some other resorts, we were very impressed with the AI perks of Lux*. Almost everything extra was included. Including craft beers, homemade rum, semi premium wines. As my hubby puts it, Lux* really goes all out to please, and includes many artisanal experiences that are way above the norm of any hotels we have been to. Examples are the home made rum at the rum bar, the poolside home made ice cream parlour, the food truck (BEST fish burger ever!!!!!!), the craft beer at K Bar...... We met many staff who are so well trained in their service standard and are just so attentive. Special mention to : - Dave from the MIXE Restaurant who never fails to greet us with a big smile and make watermelon juice especially for my 2 fussy kids - Ramesh (I believe he’s a manager) from the Beach Rouge restaurant who gave us Strawberry Smoothies when I asked whether the slushee machines were operational (which they are not) - yang and Jordan from the front desk who made us feel at home because they are from Singapore! - Oliver and Manish from the K bar and Rum bar, who gave us the best rum tasting experience ever - Sanjave from K bar who prepared us pre-dinner snacks of chicken and samosa just because we said we might get hungry waiting till 830pm for our dinner. He also helped us pack the homemade rum we bought from them and the other wines we have into a box for bringing home. - tarun from poolside who was just so friendly and attentive from start to end. I hope my extended review will give them the recognition they so well deserve. We met travelers from all over the world and made friends with them, exchanged Facebook and contacts. There’s just something about being in a resort that makes you so happy and well taken care of, that you will also be more happy and easy to open up to new people around you. Lux* is luxurious but not opulent. And it’s the experiences that made all the difference. We want to experience the other Lux* resorts soon!

Trip Advisor Review Exceptional * Note for Full disclosure- we got married on this trip... on the one hand that may make us less objective (rose tinted eyewear etc) but on the other hand we were very particular, so our threshold for being impressed may have been higher than usual. (We visited Lux* Belle Mare 26/11-10/12 2018 on an all-inclusive package with BA holidays.) We’ve been to Lux* in South Ari Atol, Maldives so we knew the Lux* brand and having decided Mauritius was the place to get married we chose Lux* over the more expensive options (Residence, Shangri-La) because we’d been impressed by the design led offer and the service concept. We chose Belle Mare partly because of the slightly higher (at the time of booking) trip advisor score but mostly for the beach (giving up on the sunset as the price one has to pay by going to the east coast). As context, we’ve been to lots of 5* resorts in Europe, Caribbean and across south east Asia and I work in a hospitality business. Honestly, by any objective measure this is a really exceptional hotel. Antoine the GM leads a superb team, and the proposition that they have crafted and together deliver every day is quite superb. Ok, it’s not perfect (but what offering is?) but the overall effect is a really tremendous experience and very well worth the (quite high) tariff. This is a service offering where the customer’s experience is very genuinely at the heart of every staff interaction. There are some clear underlying principles that have been very well trained into the team, but the personalities of the individual staff, with a wide variety of ages and backgrounds, come shining through. Nothing is too much trouble, and your comfort is always the centre of enquiry.... but it’s not robotic or formulaic instead feeling really authentic and friendly, so that it feels like the people genuinely care about you. There is a surprising level of joined-up thinking and coordination between the different departments which leaves the impression that the whole team gets to know you over the stay and there is continuity in the journey as the days tick by. I said it wasn’t perfect - but when standards are so high the less-than-perfect stands out. But on the few times anything happened the team were on it quickly and the attention to detail as they sorted things out was very impressive. The hotel isn’t very new, but the facilities are very good and maintenance standards are high. Our room was spacious and comfortable, with a very large and comfortable mattress, excellent WiFi (actually its excellent throughout the resort), a good audio-visual set-up, 2 fridges and a large and well appointed bathroom with high quality products and towels. Sound-proofing was as good as you’ll find and the room service staff were friendly, discreet and efficient. Food options are good with enough choice and variety to keep it interesting for a 2 week stay. The quality was good throughout and very often extremely high. We ate in all 6 restaurant format options and all, in their own way, impressed us. We didn’t have a haphazard plate of food in 2 weeks. The local and house drink choices are fine. It’s a little disappointing to have the ‘premium brand’ exclusion for the All Inclusive Package (and I’ll be taking up with British Airways Holidays separately how poorly communicated is that feature of the package) but it wasn’t a distraction for us as the ScrewCap wine series, basic spirits and local beer were all great... and in K Bar they make wicked Martinis. Entertainment was consistently good. Beach Rouge has a good vibe with occasionally a very good DJ (though probably because of the clientele it feels less of a bar/night club than its namesake in the Maldives). The traditional ‘lobby’ bands and performers were very good, although break-outs of dancing from the guests was only sporadic. There was a grand piano but disappointingly no piano player which was a shame.... Beyond this there are lots of distractions, with the gym being particularly well fitted-out compared to most in similar hotels, and well located too. Watersports are copious and relaxed and there is the usual participation opportunities such as beach volleyball if that’s your thing. The spa is peaceful and has good facilities (and very good treatments) but it’s perhaps not as architecturally stunning as in some other 5* resorts of our experience. Open-air cinema and other Luxe* quirks all add to the experience and one never feels at a loss for something to do. Belle Mare beach is stunning, and the hotel is probably on the best bit of it. You can walk or run for 3km in either direction at low tide; it’s very safe for swimming with lots of roped-off areas keeping out the boats and the lagoon never gets very choppy. We had a (hopefully) understated wedding ceremony on the beach. Jennifer, the Lux* wedding advisor, was really excellent. Her organisation and communication skills were first rate and she was patient and helpful throughout. The hotel had a good range of options available to choose from, pricing wasn’t unreasonable and the 3rd party providers such as photography were very user-friendly. Overall we would highly recommend this hotel, are definitely promoters of the Lux* brand and would very much recommend the island. A couple of other things of note that are less related to the hotel: - It’s an hour’s transfer from airport and the roads aren’t great, something shared with the quality of the vehicles and the standard of driving safety...that’s a real PITA when you’re tired and travel-weary - Mauritius airport (on departure) was a joke ... we were forced by BA’s local rep to take a transfer that arrived at the airport 3hrs before our flight (necessitating a truly bonkers alarm call); we then discovered why, as passport control and security was a 90 minute omnishambles. And forget the VAT refund the process for which is genuinely in achievable unless you were to tag an extra hour onto the whole affair Hope his was useful
