Vientiane holidays: a city of character

We also recommend you visit another highlight of Vientiane – the Patuxai or ‘Victory Gate’. This beautiful structure was built in 1957-1968 in memory of the Laotian soldiers who gave their lives in the war of independence from France. The five towers represent the five Buddhist principles.

Experience the tranquil side of Vientiane with a wander along the banks of the Mekong River, stopping off at riverside bars for refreshments when the mood takes you. For a unique mode of transport to see the sights, tuk tuks are cheap and always available. At the morning market you’ll find everything from electronics to clothing and handicrafts, as well as a fabulous range of local delicacies. At night the town transforms into a foodie’s paradise, where local cooks serve up authentic bowls of noodle soup and spicy laap (the renowned national treasure of Laotian meat salad). Outside the city you’ll find Buddha Park, a green meadow filled with hundreds of statues depicting the Buddha. This is a peaceful place for you to spend an hour or two in quiet contemplation.
