Best time to visit Jordan – By season
Spring and autumn – The period from March to May and September to November is the best time of the year to travel to Jordan. Temperatures mostly range from the 20s to mid-30s, and weather conditions are sunny and dry. It is also the busiest time to visit Jordan. If you want a quieter experience, try the months of March and November, which experience temperature conditions with fewer crowds.
Summer – Summertime in Jordan can be pretty brutal, with temperatures breaking into the 40s, particularly in the South, in places such as Aqaba and the Dead Sea. However, there are exceptions. Amman enjoys moderate temperatures, making it a great destination to visit during the hotter months. Wadi Rum’s desert sky is at its clearest during July and August, presenting the opportunity to witness the Perseid meteor showers and for stargazing.
Winter – Contrary to popular belief, Jordan experiences a reasonably cold winter, with the mountains and towns at higher altitudes receiving snow. It’s a quiet period of the year and a good time to visit the country’s popular attractions without any peak season crowds. The coastal town of Aqaba sees daytime highs in the 20s, making it a perfect destination to escape the winter blues.
Best time to visit Jordan – By activity
Petra – The best time to visit Petra is spring and autumn, from March to May and September to November. During these months, Petra experiences temperatures in the 20s and sunshine-filled days, allowing you to sightsee its ancient monuments comfortably. These months are also incredibly popular. If you want a crowd-free experience, aim to reach the main attractions early in the morning or visit during winter when the tourist population is significantly less.
Aqaba/Red Sea – Aqaba is a year-round destination. However, the best time to enjoy the waters is in spring, early summer, and autumn when the waters are warm and have excellent visibility.
Wadi Rum – The desert sands of Wadi Rum can get unbearably hot during the summer months, and nights can get quite chilly during the colder months. The spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most conducive conditions for outdoor activities in the Wadi Rum.
Dead Sea – Travelers from around the world visit the Dead Sea to experience weightlessness all year round. But the best time to experience the Dead Sea is the spring and autumn months. Winter temperatures are around 20°C, but the weather can be slightly unpredictable during the colder months, and summers see the mercury hit 40°C.
Amman – Located at an elevation of 3000+ feet, Amman sees cooler temperatures than the rest of the country and even snow during the winter months. The best time for sightseeing in Amman is spring and autumn.
What to wear for Jordan?
Jordan’s warm weather and modest dressing sensibilities call for comfortable clothing with relaxed fits and shoulder and knee coverage. It is a predominantly Islamic country and more conservative dressing is recommended to not attract unwanted attention (especially for women). Shirts with sleeves, lightweight trousers, and long dresses work very well. Similar rules apply to men too: skip the shorts in favor of khakis, linen pants, and cotton shirts with sleeves. Men and women can wear Western-style bathing suits at beachside resorts.
For travel during the popular spring and autumn months, bring along a few warm layers and a rain cover to account for the differences in day and night temperatures and variations between destinations. Summer travel in Jordan requires a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect you from the sun’s harsh rays.
Bring good quality footwear, sandals or walking shoes that allow you to roam Petra’s monuments and other destinations comfortably.
