Set out from Shanghai for the Tongli Water Village, a water township with over 400 years of history situated in the Jiangsu Province in the south of the Yangtze River Delta. Learn about local traditions and enjoy the picturesque water county scenery.
Separated into seven inlets by 15 rivers, the water village is a perfect combination of exquisite bridges, river lets, and quaint houses.
You'll find over 40 bridges dotted across this ancient county many of which are hundreds of years old with their own special style and auspicious names.
Tongli is home to some beautiful traditional residences including gardens, houses, and temples which date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Among the town's highlights are the Jiayin Hall built in 1922 and Congben Hall built in 1911, these historic structures are fantastic examples of traditional Chinese architecture and include more than 100 wooden carved figures.
One of the township's most notable attractions is the Tuisiyuan Garden or Retreat & Reflection Garden which is situated in the centre of Tongli. This privately owned garden was recognised, along with other classical Suzhou gardens, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
