Begin with where you stay, because in Kenya that single choice decides almost everything you will see. The Masai Mara National Reserve is a famous stage, and it is magnificent. The wildlife moves freely between reserve and conservancy, so the game is every bit as rich, and Naboisho holds one of the highest lion densities in Africa. Timing the Earth

Everyone builds a Kenyan safari around the Great Migration, the river crossings of roughly July to October, and they are right to want it. The migration is a year-round movement, and the finest light and the smallest crowds often fall on the shoulder season. Knowing when the herds travel is the difference between a postcard and a front-row seat.

Travel north to Samburu and the Lewa plains, where you will encounter creatures seen almost nowhere else, including the reticulated giraffe, the Grevy’s zebra, and the long-necked gerenuk. These are dryland animals built specifically for this red earth, framed by Mount Kenya glowing on the horizon.

In Lewa, you step into one of the continent’s great rhino sanctuaries. Further into the Rift Valley, the soda lakes still gather flamingos in their thousands, most reliably these days at Bogoria and Elementaita. Lift off over any of it in a balloon at first light and the herds move beneath you.
