OM ALI FROM EGYPT
From legends of a celebratory offering after a 13th-century
victory, to revenge folklore and stories of a royal kitchen
accident, Om Ali (or Umm Ali) has quite the backstory.
This is essentially a milk-soaked pastry or bread pudding
topped with coconut flakes, raisins, and nuts. It features
prominently in local celebrations, including Ramadan and
Eid feasts. In Cairo, the Simonds Bakery, El Malky, and The
Batter Half are some of the best places to sample this much-
loved dessert.
