SUMMER 2026 ༠ 3
WAYS OF
SEEING
THE
WORLD
In our daily lives, we’ve grown used
to seeing the world through tiny
digital windows. Algorithms feed us
curated snippets, and it’s easy to trick
ourselves into thinking we’ve seen it
all. But the true opening of the mind
occurs when we step outside that
digital frame and physically immerse
ourselves in places outside our
familiar comfort zones.
I’m a firm believer that the best
souvenirs aren’t the things we pack
in a suitcase; they’re the shifts in
perspective we bring home from a
holiday. These shifts occur through
interpersonal exchanges, encounters
with other cultures, and immersion in
the histories of distant lands. But they
also occur when we observe the world
differently. Sometimes, the journey is
itself the destination, where we can
lean back and let fascinating places
glide past—such as a train journey on
the Maharajas' Express in India, a river
cruise in Vietnam, or a horseback ride
in Patagonia (page 30).
Similarly, changes in perspective can
arise from vantage points that make
the “big picture” tangible. A view
from high above can make a hectic
metropolis appear like a calm, glowing
canvas; it can make the hidden
patterns of the wilderness visible.
On page 8, you will find fascinating
examples of bird’s-eye views, from
mountain peaks, observation decks,
cable cars, glass bridges, or canopy
bridges. You can also explore the
diverse approaches to experiencing an
African safari (page 22). Conversely,
looking down or going underground
uncovers realms that often remain
hidden. From page 46 on, you can
dive into subterranean tunnels, towns,
and catacombs, and even travel
underwater.
