CUICOCHA LAGOON, COTACACHI
Standing on the rim of the Cuicocha Lagoon in the Andean highlands of northern Ecuador, 
it is hard to imagine that this serene, blue expanse is the caldera of the Cotacachi 
volcanic complex. Hike the Cuicocha Loop Trail, a 7.5-mile trail, where every turn reveals a 
different perspective of the lake. Pause at various viewpoints and take in the lava domes 
at the centre of the crater, which appear like emerald islands in a sea of navy.
