Rugged beaches, verdant tea plantations, serene backwaters and quaint towns steeped in history: South India is as fascinating as it is diverse. Each of the five states in the region — Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh — draws you in with its distinct cuisine, lush landscapes and rich culture. Whether you are looking for the best adventure places in South India or a quiet stay amid sprawling plantations up in the rolling hills of the Western Ghats, we can curate the holiday of your dreams!
Our team of travel experts has a wealth of knowledge on South India, having travelled across the region themselves. Here’s a handpicked list of some of our top experiences in South India, from leisurely boat rides in the backwaters to visits to centuries-old temple complexes.
Cycle through Fort Kochi

Each day at sunrise, Fort Kochi, the Queen of the Arabian Sea, springs to life. One of India’s earliest European settlements, this seaside city in Kerala offers the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Our cycling tour of Fort Kochi, one of the city’s older neighbourhoods, is a great way to experience its multicultural heritage.
Pedal past colonial buildings, traditional houses and several art and antique stores tucked away in meandering lanes. One of the city’s most defining sights is that of Chinese fishing nets propped up along the shore on bamboo and teak poles. Watch as fishermen set out to deftly haul these nets into the water and head to the fish market to see how the fresh catch is sold. Have a delectable local breakfast at one of many eateries in Fort Kochi, before wrapping up the tour.
Go kayaking at Coconut Lagoon

Experience paradise on earth at Coconut Lagoon, a stunning resort nestled in a secluded bay on Lake Vembanad in Kumarakom, Kerala. The resort is accessed by a traditional wooden canoe, and once you’re here, stay in aesthetically decorated wooden bungalows surrounded by coconut groves and paddy fields. There’s much to do at this resort, from bird watching to indulging in a traditional Ayurvedic spa treatment.
Seeking a dose of adventure? Go kayaking along the lake and spot colourful kingfishers soaring overhead or sprightly fish jumping out of the water. If you’d like to learn an ancient martial art form, take a few Kalaripayattu (traditional martial art) classes under the guidance of skilled teachers.
Glide along the backwaters on a houseboat

Discover the simple pleasures of slow travel as you cruise along on a Kettuvallam (a traditional wooden houseboat) down the backwaters of Alleppey in Kerala. Spice Coast Cruises, our partner, offers stunning houseboats complete with a living area and bedrooms framed by large windows and an open deck to soak in the beauty of the region.
Sail past paddy fields, lush coconut groves, sleepy villages and unwind as the water laps against the boat gently. The overnight cruise lets you slow down and enjoy a restful sleep amid swaying palms. Wake up to birdsong, and a hearty breakfast with a steaming cup of tea.

Explore the temples of Hampi
Located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River and surrounded by massive granite boulders, Hampi in Karnataka is an awe-inspiring sight. This UNESCO World Heritage Site served as the capital city of the Vijayanagara Empire in South India, and was built during the golden era of the last great Hindu Kingdom between the 14th and 16th centuries.
More than 1,600 structures remain standing in Hampi, including royal complexes, temples, and forts. Nestled amid paddy fields, the site also includes the Virupaksha Temple, the oldest in the complex, and an active place of worship. With its market streets leading to the temple, water tanks, fully-equipped temple kitchens and intricate craftsmanship, the site takes you back in time, while allowing you a peek into the customs and traditions in 14th-century southern India.
Take a cooking class

South Indian food is varied, with each state and region taking pride in its distinct culinary heritage. Rice, vegetables, seafood and meat feature prominently in a typical meal in these parts. Kerala, for instance, is known for its affinity for coconut (oil and milk) and fish preparations.
At the stylish Spice Tree Munnar Resort in Munnar, Kerala, you can not only relish a traditional Kerala feast on a banana leaf, but also learn to cook some of the region’s traditional dishes. The seasoned chefs at the resort’s kitchen take you through the nuances of the local cuisine, and under their expert guidance, you could whip up a few dishes such as a fish curry or coconut rice, for instance. Learn some tips along the way, and take down notes!
The luxury resort perched high up in the mountains of the Western Ghats overlooks tea plantations, and offers a pleasant, relaxed stay. In addition to cooking classes, you can also tour the plantations in the vicinity or simply curl up with a book by the pool or in the library.
Experience Mysore Palace at night

One of the most spectacular experiences in South India is visiting Mysore Palace at night. This magnificent compound was home to Maharajas for hundreds of years, from the 14th century all the way to the 1950s. The palace is a three-story stone structure located in the heart of Mysore city, with great views of Chamundi Hills.
Every Sunday evening, the palace is illuminated in a spectacular display of bright lights that dance across its pale granite facade. Stop to take in the splendid sight, and later, drive up Chamundi Hills to see temples. Enjoy sweeping views of the palace and the rest of the city from up the hills.
