Rodrigues Island Holidays

The rhythmic sound of lapping waves against the white sand shores encapsulate the slow, laid back atmosphere of Rodrigues Island. Only a 90-minute flight from Mauritius and 350 miles off the north-east coast, Rodrigues Island is part of the Mascarene archipelago and one of the smallest islands, only 11x5 miles. The island is surrounded by a picture perfect lagoon and neighbouring protected islets.

The easiest and best way to explore the island is by foot. Coastal paths stretch to the hills and meander to the sea. Step back in time when you meet the locals and absorb the friendly and laidback atmosphere of their lifestyles. Visit the market on a Saturday morning when the island is at its busiest, and take a look at the fresh local produce, or pick up a souvenir.

Boutique hotels and guest houses scatter the shore lines, with plenty of secluded coves for a peaceful day of bathing in the warm waters. Your day wouldn’t be complete without a visit to a local restaurant or café for a traditional meal. Eat the catch of the day – freshly cooked seafood mixed with spices and unique vegetation from the island.

Rodrigues is known for its rich biodiversity with a range of plant and animal species. The Rodrigues solitaire was the national bird but over the years, and with early colonisation, the forests and animal life were severely damaged.

In recent years Rodriguans took action to preserve their beautiful island paradise. Now, forests are flourishing and protected islands and reserves like Ile aux Cocos and Ile aux Sables mean bird and plant life are thriving again. Visit these reserves by boat and spot the Vieille-fille, a small plant with pink flowers used to make an island drink.

For divers, the famous kilometre long stretch at La Pass St Francois that teems with exotic fish, turtles, and rays is a must. There are around 20 dive sites off the east coast alone, and from October to April the waters are particularly clear. Snorkelling from the beach is also possible. The reef creates a natural pool for plenty of marine life. Boat trips to neighbouring islands offer great spots for snorkelling too, so we’d recommend a trip to Ile Aux Chats and Hermitage Island.
