Smithsonian Institute

Great for all the family

We love talking holidays and we're here to help. If you'd like our advice on how to create an amazing Washington DC holiday, just give our Destination Specialists a call.

With 19 museums and galleries, nine resource facilities and a zoo, the Smithsonian Institute has something to interest everyone.  The museums are dotted throughout Washington DC, with 10 located on the National Mall. See an estimated 137 million objects, works of art, and specimens within the museums.

If you're travelling with family, the children will love the National Air and Space Museum which has free interactive activities from flight simulators, planetarium shows and IMAX movies. Or head to the National Zoo which has 18 areas for you all to explore. Perhaps history is what interests you, if so head to the National Museum of African American History and culture or the National Museum of American History, where all be able to view sheet music written by Duke Ellington and many more exhibits.

We recommend starting on the upper floors of the museums and arriving early of weekends and late on weekdays to avoid the crowds. All these are free to enter, so go explore.
