We won't be going back

I was looking forward to our trip to this ranch in January 2019. We have stayed at several other dude ranches, and this didn't match the standards of the other ranches. The Positives: The location was nice, and our casita room had a great view of the valley with amazing sunsets. We liked the easy chairs in the front room and the chaise lounges on the patio to sit and look at the view. The bird watching hike was outstanding! Rick, (I think his name was) did a wonderful job pointing out the various birds and showing us the pictures in his book. He even spotted a road runner for us! There were only three of us on the hike, so he asked if we'd like to go for another half hour. So we did, and saw even more birds. I highly recommend this activity! My husband liked the horseback riding, and said the best ride was to the breakfast cookout. The Cowboy cookout location was great! The Cowboy singer, Bill Ganz, was outstanding and really talented! But I got sick from the food, see negatives below. I had an awesome 80-minute massage with Charlotte! I felt relaxed when I was done, so be sure and ask for her if you go. The buffets were ok, but I'd avoid fresh salads. I got sick one night from I think the sulfites they might put on the lettuce to keep it fresh longer. I did like the variety in the lunch buffets. I found the front desk staff helpful and friendly. The Negatives: The bathroom in our room (#21) had plumbing issues. The first morning the toilet plugged up, and thankfully someone came quickly to fix it. However, the next two mornings we ended up going down to the bathrooms at the dining area for fear it would plug again. It looked like low water pressure since the casita was up the hill. But we shouldn't have to worry about this on a vacation! And no one ever took care of the very slow draining shower when we told housekeeping about it the first day. The other room negatives were that it is very poorly lit, and very dusty. I think housekeeping doesn't vacuum very often. I also had to call them back to clean up the coffee area! That's part of their regular job! Also, our neighbors were lazy and rude in that they kept walking across our patio when we weren’t out there, and not on their own walkway just steps below us to get to their casita! Not totally a private casita. The cowboy cookout and music were fun, but I got sick from some of the food. I think it was the salads with possibly sulfites on the, but who knows? I was up half the night with a terrible pain in my stomach, and so I missed going to the breakfast cookout the next day. Maybe I was spared another stomach ache! The food was just ok - it was hit and miss if you ordered from the kitchen. My husband had a great fish entree one day, but one day my huevos rancheros were lukewarm and runny. I usually stuck to eating the buffet. They seemed understaffed in the dining room - the staff seemed rushed and not wanting to just talk a bit. In fact, the whole ranch seemed understaffed. What gives here? The horse corral was disgusting! 50 or more horses were crammed into this small area under a roof and standing in a foot or more of mud and manure!! This is uncalled for and no way to treat animals! This is cruel and they need to use more of the corral space that's right next to the roofed area!! I’ve never seen such terrible conditions for horses to be forced to be in for most of the day!! Final Thoughts: I wanted to like this place, but we will not return. There were many positives, but the negatives outweighed the positives.
