Tanque Verde was like Paradise...and we live in Hawaii.

Honolulu, Hawaii

This was our first visit to a dude ranch and have had little to no experience with horses and had no idea what to expect. Two kids (7 and 10) had so much fun they would rather come here than go to Disneyland. What was great about it? Everything. Food: Great food for every meal. The Cowboy Cookout is a MUST! Awesome setting, food, music and even surprise visits from a few coyotes and javelinas. Breakfast ride to the old homestead and the hot blueberry pancakes of the griddle were amazing. We were on the all-inclusive package (I recommend this as the ala carte prices for lunch and dinner were somewhat pricey) so I felt that the food was a good value. Accommodations: We stayed in the 1BR unit at Quail Hollow. Nice room, clean and renovated bathroom. It was a nice mixture of modern amenities with a old world charm. There was even a fireplace in the room that we used for one night. Our room was a short 3 minute walk to the dining hall. Kids Activities: We were there for 4 nights and weren't able to fit everything in that we wanted to do. Fishing in the lake with Mr. Rich (a formed National Park Ranger) was SOOO much fun. He was very patient with the kids and in 30 minutes essentially taught them how to fish. Mr. Rick and his "critters" (e.g., snakes, scorpions and tarantulas) was also very educational and fun. The kids learned a LOT about snakes and that we don't need to be afraid of them. The Kid's Program was GREAT. The wranglers take the time to teach the kids how to ride (our 7 year old had never been on a horse and by the end of our stay he was loping around the arena). The itinerary for the Kid's Program is stuffed with different things and the kids LOVED it. Adult Activities: You MUST sign up for the team penning. They let 5 calves loose in an arena and you and your team must herd them into different pens. Sounds strange and not that fun, but it was one of my personal highlights. I didn't know how to ride, but we still went for it and were glad that we did. There are also exhibitors/artists that set up in the afternoons and we participated in the belt making (additional fee of $65 to make a leather belt). Consistent with all of our other experiences, it was FANTASTIC. Lou helped the kids design their own belts, stamp the leather and then stain it. My wife and I made our own as well and our family is proud to wear out hand-crafted leather belts. We almost missed the belt activity because we had a ride scheduled at the same time, but in talking with Lou she offered to stay late to give us the opportunity to make belts and we are so glad she did. Everyone is very flexible and accommodating and all you need to do is ask and they will find a way to make it happen. Weather: We were there in mid-january and the weather was perfect. Cold in the morning and evening and warming up to the high 70's in mid-day. It was a great time to visit. Tanque Verde really deserves all of the accolades it has received. Don't be discouraged by some of the negative reviews as I read them and was concerned about our stay. However, having now experienced the ranch for myself, I wholeheartedly recommend Tanque Verde as a great family experience. Like i mentioned in the title of my review, our family lives in Hawaii and Tanque Verde was like paradise for us.

Enjoying cowboy life in Arizona

Washington DC, District of Columbia

When we arrived the ranch, we were fascinated by the big numbers of horses they have. We join sunset ride right after we check-in. Although that day was cloudy but we still enjoy the ambience along our route. As typical ranches we have seen before, we did not expect any luxury life or facilities. Surprisingly, this ranch has almost everything that typical 4-5 star hotels have (except bell boy, and TV..but who cares... better stay outdoor under the warm sun!!). The ranch has outdoor heated-pool which is necessary in the winter time!! They also has whirlpool. We loved to soak in their whirlpool under beautiful stars and clear sky in the evening). The ranch has plenty of activities and kids club as well. The room we stayed was cleaned and had plenty of space with separate bedroom and living area, small pantry bar, as well as fireplace in the bedroom. It would be better if they upgrade the fireplace as it had plenty of smoke spreading into our bedroom. We had to open the window to aerate and get some fresh air in. We certainly like to stay with them again. The only inconvenience is the choice of package i.e. all inclusive, bed and breakfast, etc. Our daughter is the intermediate horse rider. She love to ride all the time. Therefore she suits to "All inclusive" In contrary, my husband and I are not intensive riders. We also loves to explore the area instead of riding and doing the activities at the ranch all the time. Therefore, we certainly suit to package e.g. "bed and breakfast" and pay the activities from a la carte menu. According to the answer of the staff when we inquire about this information for our next stay, there is no more option to choose different package for the people who stay in the same room. It would be more helpful if they reconsider to either set up individual package or create "day pass activities" option to pay for having the access for whole day activities.
