Get a taste of true southern charm as you set out on a Deep South Discovery tour. Venture through the states of Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Louisiana, stopping at vibrant cities ready to welcome you in with classic southern hospitality.
Spend nine days discovering the gems of this captivating region. It’s a region defined by its history, food, music and a slower pace of life. Here, stunning Antebellum South architecture stands under the dreamy haze of the southern sun. Sweet melodies drift from open doors along streets of bars. Food is celebrated, savoured and shared, with local delicacies from soupy gumbo to fried green tomatoes and barbecue food.
As you set out on your Deep South Discovery adventure, you’ll get to know cities that hold the tales of the Civil Rights Movements, visit historic plantations and explore places so captivating that they’ve sparked the inspiration for some of America’s most famous movies and novels.
Explore the bustling city of Atlanta and discover the inspiration behind Gone with the Wind. Find yourself transported to an era gone by as you visit the beautiful Antebellum South home of Stately Oaks Plantation. In South Carolina, soak up Charleston’s charm and perhaps even visit Boone Hall Plantation, with its wondrous Avenue of Oaks. Wander Savannah’s famed city squares and stroll in the city’s polished parks, then follow the Civil Rights Trail from Montgomery to Selma. Here, you’ll discover some of the most significant sites of the American Civil Rights Movement. Finally, head to New Orleans, the city that gave the world jazz music, and discover its fascinating fusion of cultures.

Start your first full day in the Deep South by enjoying a city tour. Atlanta has a lot to see, including the boyhood home of Martin Luther King. You’ll also get to delve into the inspiration behind the historical novel Gone with the Wind and learn about the author, Margaret Mitchell, who called Atlanta home. Visit the Road to Tara Museum and discover memorabilia from the film version of Gone with the Wind, including costumes worn by Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. Explore Stately Oaks Plantation, the place that acted as the inspiration for the plantation in the film.
After a day of exploration, enjoy an evening welcome reception. Tonight’s a great chance to get to know your fellow travellers and relax after your day of exploration.

Atlanta - Augusta - Charleston

Today, you’ll head towards the western coast of South Carolina. Make a stop at Augusta, Georgia’s second oldest city, then continue your journey to Charleston. You’ll reach this historic and charming city by late afternoon, then spend the rest of the evening at leisure.

Enjoying a locally guided tour of Charleston this morning. Wander the beautifully preserved historic district and see how the city has been shaped by the past, including natural disasters, the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. This afternoon, an optional visit to Boone Hall Plantation awaits (payable locally), with its moss draped Avenue of Oaks.
Leave Charleston behind and head towards Savannah, your home for the night. En route, stop on Port Royal Island and visit Beaufort, South Carolina’s second oldest city and home to stunning Antebellum South architecture.

Savannah - Montgomery

Journey across Georgia and into Alabama, heading for the state’s capital city of Montgomery. Given the city’s pivotal role in the American Civil Rights Movement, there’s a lot of history to discover here. Visit the Rosa Parks Library and Museum to learn about the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the event that ignited the movement. Then why not visit the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King Jr. led the Boycott?

Montgomery - Selma - New Orleans

This morning, you’ll leave Montgomery behind. Head to another city that was significant in the Civil Rights Movement: Selma, Alabama. See the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the site that marked the start of the march from Selma to Montgomery and saw the attacks of Bloody Sunday. You can also visit the Brown Chapel AME Church, where preparations were made for the march.
Continue your journey to New Orleans, travelling south through Mississippi state. Soak up New Orlean’s culture, a fusion of Spanish, French, Caribbean, African and Anglo-Saxon. Why not enjoy an optional Riverboat Dinner Cruise (payable locally) and enjoy the sounds of a Dixieland jazz band?
