Communication within the hotel lacking... and a bit pricey for what you get

The Peabody is a fairly highly rated hotel with that "old school charm" and expected high quality service. Unfortunately, some of our experience went a bit badly; but some of our experience went very well. THE GOOD STUFF: Upon arrival with a conference group, we had requested a room with a king size bed - which was truly only a request. But, as we checked-in, the front desk attendant was able to find us a room with a king size bed for all FOUR NIGHTS (just great)! We would not be getting any of the complimentary breakfasts or other services that go with this size room, as we were still only going to pay the conference room rate (which was fine). This was extremely kind of The Peabody to provide us and we did greatly appreciate the additional space in the room and bathroom. THE NICKLE & DIME STUFF: Of course this is an older facility - so although the room was quite spacious, the bathroom was pretty tiny. In addition, many "up-scale" hotels now have refrigerators and/or coffee machines in their rooms. This is not the case at the Peabody. If you want morning coffee without sitting down for breakfast, be sure to get to the cafe early enough to not stand in line with everyone else who wants just a coffee and yogurt. And just for the hell of it I'll share the real "nickle & dime" experience... my credit card was fraudulently used as I got to the hotel. I told them the reservation charge was going to have to be changed to a new # and the credit card company was sending me by FedEx a new card. The FedEx package was delivered to my room... for $3.50!!! Then the morning of check-out, the front desk left an urgent message on our room phone that my credit card wouldn't accept any charges...uh duh! Not only did I tell you this was a card being cancelled, you charged me $3.50 to get my new card!?!?! THE BAD STUFF: Lastly, it just seemed the staff wasn't able to communicate. We asked to have a light bulb that went out in our bathroom replaced... two different service staff came to our door with mirrors to be replaced and then finally a third staff came and fixed the light bulb. There was very little accessory furniture in our KING SIZE ROOM. It appeared from other rooms we were able to see, that there were benches at the end of the bed and more chairs than we had. After asking three times for the bench, I gave up and just asked for some of the conference room chairs. Two chairs finally showed up on the 3rd day of our 4 day stay. THE LAST "maybe" GOOD THING: I did explain these issues to a manager on our way out. I was hoping I guess for one free night - we got the $5.00+ additional service charges per day refunded for a whopping almost $25. That's a wrap. The Peabody's "daily duck march" to the fountain in the lobby with the "Master of the Ducks" is indeed pretty unique. But I'd visit the hotel and not stay there.

Peabody Hotel -“Quack” House

Omaha, Nebraska

Old historic hotel near Beale St. and the riverfront in Memphis. Friendly staff, clean room and crisp white linens. A lot of hoopla over a few ducks but a cute story. A bit pricey drinks, food, and room rate for the type of accommodations. Nice experience.
