Almost, but not quite there...

Sacramento

Our family booked this hotel based on the guest ratings, but I should have read the reviews. We had stayed at a few chain hotels and I wanted something different for our night in Memphis. The Hu popped up and it seemed like it was just what I was looking for. I love historic places, and this one seemed to have a very hip vibe based on the photos. When we headed up to our room there was a very bad odor near the elevators, the kind where you hold your breath. Only one elevator was operating. When it finally made its way to the first floor sooo many people got off of it and were complaining about how long it took to get to them, they jammed in so they didn't have to wait longer for the next one. I assumed the smell and elevator were recent issues, but reading past reviews I found people mentioned the same things a few months before our visit! Other reviewers also mentioned the water temperature. In the evening the water was fine. In the morning we only had hot water. I guess I prefer that to the people who said they only had cold, but it is painful to shower in super hot water. I assumed the hotel had just opened and that they were still trying to work out the kinks. I asked one of the ladies at the front desk and was surprised to learn they had been open for about a year. I guess the "kinks' are just part of the Hu experience. The staff were very friendly. My daughter and I were down in the lobby enjoying our coffee and noticed the easy banter the ladies at the front desk/coffee bar (another kind of odd thing) had with each other as well as with guests. They were the highlight of our visit. I wouldn't not stay here again, but I also wouldn't have such high expectations going into my visit.

Valentine's weekend getaway

Muscle Shoals, Alabama

I selected best hotel in Memphis and this one popped up. It actually was the worst hotel ive stayed at. This was supposed to be romantic for my husband. It was more of a hassle and less romantic. Not what we expected.
