Birthplace of Mardi Gras

Originally the capital of the Louisiana Territory, the beautiful coastal city of Mobile boasts a rich history and is known as the birthplace of Mardi Gras in the United States.

Take a stroll along the tree lined streets of downtown Mobile, the city's entertainment centre where you'll find a lively mix of restaurants, nightclubs, bars, galleries and theatres. For a lively night out head down to Dauphin Street where the party keeps going until the early hours.

Stop in at one of the city’s fantastic museums such as the Oakleigh Historic Complex - home to Mobile's official antebellum mansion or Battleship Memorial Park - where you can visit it the World War II-era battleship the USS ALABAMA and submarine USS DRUM.

When it comes to dining Mobile is famous for the cornucopia of fish and seafood which is available - indulge in some of the freshest seafood at Wintzell’s Oyster House, a true Mobile landmark. However this lively city has so much more to offer on the culinary front - from the rich variety of fresh southern produce and farm to table dining to the host of food festivals such as the BBQ Championship and Hog Wild Festival in March and the three day Greek Fest in October.

Nature lovers should head down to the Audubon Bird Sanctuary on Dauphin Island - explore over 164 acres of maritime forest and remember to bring you camera to capture some of the thousands of species of birds who migrate through this beautiful island habitat.

Or make your way over to the 5 Rivers Delta Centrer - this outdoor recreation and conservation area is where the Mobile, Spanish, Tensaw, Appalachee and Blakeley Rivers flow into Mobile Bay and is where you can find boat tours, kayak rentals, walking trails and picnic areas.
