A stunning rustic setting

Dunton Hot Springs is a perfectly restored former Ghost town located in the Rockies, if you are looking to really get away from it all then look no further than this indulgent luxury resort.  Life is simple at Dunton Hot Springs, from a game of pool to reading in the library or taking a stroll around the resorts grounds, however, for the more adventurous *activities include Horse riding, hiking trails, day trips to local National Parks and Fly Fishing.  The pace of life in this romantic old mining town certainly slows and that allows you to take time in selecting your meals from the new daily menu that uses many local and regional ingredients, some of which are sourced from the resorts own farm and vineyard. Accommodations include tented glamping style at Dunton River Camp or wooden cabins with all the trimmings that really give you that western vibe. If you are looking to strike gold then a visit to Dunton Hot Springs awaits....

Hidden Gem!

Dunton Hot Springs is an amazing resort nestled deep in the mountains near Dolores, CO. The staff members are friendly, attentive, knowledgeable and made our group feel like family! The food at Dunton is incredible and is sourced mostly from local farmers. There are numerous activities available during the winter to enjoy like snow shoeing, ice skating, cross country skiing, ice climbing, heli-skiing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, yoga, massages, etc. If relaxing is on your agenda, there is a wonderful, cozy library or you can soak in the hot springs. I highly recommend Dunton Hot Springs!

Underwhelming

First of all, we only visited for a few hours mid-day, so my comments are not at all related to the accommodations, which appear nice from other photos. We travelled for two hours with two other couples and our guide via snowmobile from near Telluride, with the schedule being a soak in the hot spring water and then a gourmet lunch before heading back on a 2-hour return trek cross-country. The staff was friendly, and the welcoming hot chocolate the best. However, the “bath house” left much to be desired. Other than a small one-holer restroom, there was no place for the six of us to change to swim suits and back again. No locker area, no separate changing area for men/women, no where to hang your stuff. But the turnoff, at least to me, was the water. Sorry, but immersing myself in rusty-looking water that you can’t see anything thru is just not inviting. Yes, it’s natural, hot, spring water, all that, but it just looked nasty. So, with the combination of those two negatives, I skipped entirely one primary reason I was going there. No warming soak for me. Lunch? It was good, but not what I’d call gourmet. The cost for our day was pricey, including guide and snowmobile. Not a small figure, and I’m sure a part of that goes to Dunton for lunch and my soak that didn’t happen. I’ll skip Dunton and just take a half-day snowmobile ride next time.
