A better-than-average hotel that delivers high-end service.

Service is the Chatwal's strong suit. With a minor exception or two (doormen too busy chatting each other up to operate doors), every member of the Chatwal's team that we encountered was professional and polite. Beyond service, though, there were disappointments. This is not to say that the Chatwal is a bad hotel, or even an average one. It is a luxury property outfitted with the bells and whistles that make luxury hotels great--in-room espresso machines, remote control blinds, butler service for pressing and shoe shines, and daily newspaper delivery. Even considering these perks, the Chatwal comes in, when compared to the city's other luxury stalwarts, as only better-than-average. The hotel's overall design is elegant, but certain elements are cheesy (cheap-looking stock photos of New York in guest rooms) or discordant (mid-century Noguchi coffee tables that seem otherwise inconsistent with the hotel's design vibe). More noteworthy is the fact that the hotel's "bones" simply aren't that great. We were upgraded to a junior suite that was plenty large but was laid out as a large rectangular box. The hallway-hotel-room effect was not made better by the fact that rooms on the 5th floor have small windows that let in relatively little light, making even the large-ish room feel dark and claustrophobic, especially during the day. For the money (and we paid for only a standard room), there are more luxurious options in the city. And (for me anyway) the other options have the added bonus of being farther away from the crush of Times Square. Having said all this, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that bathroom lovers might swoon for Chatwal. The bathroom in our suite was a spacious stunner of a jewel box, all mirrors and chrome and dominated by a huge rainfall shower. It was the bright spot in our otherwise better-than-average room.

A blast from the past

Lagos, Nigeria

The Chatwal is a clear attempt to evoke the feel of the classic hotel of old! The staff are particularly warm, friendly & helpful. Unfortunately, for the price, the rooms are rather small. However, if you must stay around times square, then it's one of your best choices.
