In Texas, they say, everything is bigger. Almost the size of mainland Europe with a landmass of 261,000 square miles, they may have a point. Texas has wild coastline, high peaks of over seven thousand feet and green pine forests.Texas is also blessed with over 300 days of sunshine each year allowing plenty of opportunity to explore the great outdoors. If you like food with beef in the menu this is the state with a hankering for Tex-Mex cuisine you'll love Texas. Be thrilled by tales of derring-do at the Alamo and feel like an oil magnet when you shop in downtown Dallas. But if you think Texas is all cowboys and tumbleweeds, think again.

Our Experts Recommend:
  • Zero Gravity Amusement Park
  • The Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas
  • The Alamo in San Antonio

Dallas

A cultural icon steeped in so much fascinating history. Home to the Dallas Cowboys and setting of one of the most glamorous soap-operas ever made. And if shopping is your thing then Dallas will welcome you with open arms. Also, some of the most interesting museums are to be found here, including the Sixth Floor Museum, a grisly reminder which forms part of the memorial to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. But let’s not forget JR Ewing and Miss Ellie. They have their own place of pilgrimage too, at the legendary South Fork Ranch.

Highlights

Austin

If Texas does unconventional then you will find it in Austin. Laid back and collegiate, the city has a strong libertarian vibe and with equal focus on music, including blues and jazz and indie rock ‘n roll. A hip urban scene, Austin hosts two major music festivals; South by Southwest and Austin City Limits. For a slice of traditional honky-tonk head over to the Broken Spoke for a taste of Texas dance hall. The favourable climate means there’s ample opportunity to explore the great outdoors. Austin is turning heads for all the right reasons.

San Antonio

At the heart of San Antonio is the Alamo, scene of the last ditch struggle against the army of General Santa Anna, where Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie met their fate. The city still possesses a distinct Mexican influence from those incendiary times, and though things are a great deal less incendiary these days, the city retains its origins through its cusine of choice, claiming to be the epicentre of all things Tex-Mex. Make sure you try the Riverwalk, fast becoming San Antonio’s premier cultural attraction with miles of river paths to explore filled with cafes and restaurants.
