Standards slipping?

We were originally booked to stay at another hotel in the area but decided to upgrade to Chatham Bars for a little luxury at the end of our three week New England tour. Our initial impression of the hotel from the lobby area when checking in was that it was an up market establishment (as reflected in the price). Upon check in we were told we had been upgraded to a suite which sounded great. At first sight this accommodation seemed good and it did have a really lovely sea view. However, upon closer inspection the standard of cleaning was poor. Although bathroom and bed linens were basically clean, several surfaces and skirting boards were thick with dust, tile loose in bathroom, carpets had stains, paintwork chipped and decor tired in places. We were assured that someone would come so we could show them and explain why we were unhappy with the accommodation, but after two phone calls and waiting over an hour, nobody came. Eventually we returned to reception. Elizabeth was apologetic and did get the room cleaned more thoroughly whilst we went out. We did enjoy the rest of our stay but It’s a shame that this avoidable issue really let the hotel down and not what we expected from a quality hotel. That they did eventually act has bumped our score up. Good example of how some hotels trade on their reputation but need to keep sight of detail to maintain high standards.

Absolute luxury and wonderful staff!

From the minute we arrived, we were treated like royalty! Every staff member we met was so friendly and polite, they couldn’t do enough for us - nothing was too much trouble. Registration was fast and uncomplicated, there was valet parking and we were driven from the main building to our room - what a room! With two huge beds (the most comfortable I have ever slept in), a lounge area, two fire places and a large balcony with the most magnificent view - who could ask for more? The outdoor heated pool and spa bath, surrounded by comfy sun beds and cabanas was beautiful and so relaxing with soft towels and iced water to add to the experience. The breakfast buffet offered everything for all tastes and diets - in fact, every meal was delicious and of the highest quality with locally sourced ingredients and vegetables grown on the hotel’s farm. A complementary valet service was always available to drive us the short distance to Chatham village for a look around the charming little shops. Don’t miss a visit to the ‘Duck Shop’ when you visit! All in all, a fabulous experience - I highly recommend this hotel - thank you so much for a wonderful stay!
