Nice hotel, but mattress was worn out in Room 708

Sandwich MA

We chose the Taj for our wedding anniversary, because we found a good rate on TravelZoo and of course for its nice reputation and location. This is the former Ritz and it has that older hotel with some updates, a classic type of property. Overall, very nice. Great view of the Public Garden in spring with the Boston skyline beyond. Hard to beat. Our one issue was the mattress which sagged a lot in the middle and gave us each a backache. We are not the kind of couple who prefers a firm, hard mattress but this one is overdue for replacement... a surprise in a luxury hotel. Also, the bathroom, while adequate and nice enough, was much smaller than most others. Again, a holdover from older times. It felt like the bathroom on some of the cruise ships we've been on. Otherwise, a very nice and helpful staff and a great location. Right around the corner on Boylston Street is a great little breakfast/lunch bakery spot, the "Tatte" with lots of pastries and other tempting goodies, just a 3 minute walk away. Continental breakfast at the Taj was priced at $21 and the full menu breakfast at $29, so we elected to walk to the nearby Tatte Bakery instead. In nice weather, you can sit out on the sidewalk and do some people watching. Next time, maybe I'll ask for a different room and test the bed. TIP: Get the Taj app and sign up for their membership to save the $35 "resort fee". It's a silly non-essential item unless you feel like paying for wifi (our Verizon iPhones already had excellent signals) and for a shoe shine. I suppose if you want to work out in their gym, it may be justifiable. This fee is another example of "fee creep" that is driving up the cost of hotel nights. We avoided paying it at the Waldorf in Orlando when we booked via there are ways around it. Try asking as I did!

One night at the Taj

Boston, United States

Hotel needs some life put back into its old bones. Room was bare, lacked color and any kind of accessories. Could use a coffee/tea service in the room. It was very expensive for what it had to offer. Staff seemed indifferent. I chose the hotel for the location and that did not disappoint.
