Unique historic hotel in central Boston

The Liberty is one of Boston’s premier hotels, situated in a prime central spot just a few minutes from the Boston Common and offering direct access to the Charles River esplanade. Housed in what was once the city’s most iconic jail and dating from the 1850’s, this hotel has maintained the grandeur of the original building after undergoing a $150 million transformation, whilst adding contemporary touches and modern amenities. Enter through the staggering 90-foot high central rotunda and soak up the distinctively historic atmosphere by dining in CLINK – a modern American restaurant that incorporates vestiges of the original jail cells and an open kitchen to create an exciting dining experience. There are also several other bars and restaurants and a modern fitness centre for your convenience. Best of all, guests can enjoy every modern convenience in the new tower block rooms, constructed alongside the atmospheric prison building.

  • Recent acquisition and transformation costing $150 million
  • Impressive period building dating from 1851
  • Enjoy exquisite cuisine in several on-site venues
  • Modern guest rooms with great city views
  • Situated close to Charles River and Boston Common

Neat property, great location

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay MLK weekend on the 14th floor with a river view. The property is a really cool design, with the lobby being a re-purposed historic jail. As others have mentioned, this is a lively spot on the weekend - we enjoyed the vibe (DJ in the lobby, lots of locals and hotel guests at the bar). Check-in was good - props to EJ for calling us when our room was ready. As an SPG platinum member we received a slight upgrade to a high-floor room with a river view, which was nice. It is unfortunate, though, that the windows only cover about half the room width. Only other minor complaints were slow service at the host stand at breakfast (no one seemed to be in any hurry to provide service) and the $20 resort fee (if it’s mandatory, it should be included in the room rate). Hotel is in easy walking distance of the North End (good Italian Food, Revere House and other history), Copley Square and Boston Common (park). Harvard Gardens just up the street is a good casual bar for food and drinks (not overpriced) – try the chicken sandwich. You can take the Silver Line bus then the Red line train for free from the airport to a stop just across the street from the Lobby. Overall, a great stay.

Very close to Mass General Hospital

Glastonbury, Connecticut

I recently unexpectantly had to stay overnight while a family member was in Mass General Hospital. I searched the map function here on Trip Advisor and found The Liberty. It is literally a 5 minute walk ( very safe area) to the hotel so no Uber or car is needed The building was formerly a prison and it has been restored beautifully. In the lobby is a video/tv monitor as well as many pictures showing the original structure and the process of how it was converted into the Liberty Hotel. Its very fascinating to see the history of the building Coffee and tea are complimentary in the lobby in the morning There is a light bar food menu if you arrive late like I did. You can sit at the bar or at any of the tables or chairs in the lobby and the bar staff will serve you there as well. The bartender was super nice, friendly and professional Throughout the hotel and in the rooms there is a prison/key theme. The carpet in my room had keys in the pattern and there were a few framed cell block type keys on the walls, it was very unique and different Can't comment on parking as I parked my car at the Mass General Garage to visit a family member who was a patient there and just walked to the hotel 2 bottles of complimentary water were in the room, chargers right next to the bed and the mattress and pillows were super comfortable. Some rooms overlook the Charles River If you need to be close to Mass General Hospital I highly recommend staying at The Liberty
