Driving around the Island

Self Drive Hawaii

Explore the Polynesian Islands at your own pace

When you think of Hawaii, driving is not the first thing that comes to your mind, but actually having a car means you can easily explore these beautiful paradise islands and see more of the island than just your gorgeous hotel. Not that there's anything wrong with relaxing by the pool or on the white, green or black sand beaches of course, but when there is so much to see and do, you will be making memories that will last long after your holiday has ended.

Spend the morning enjoying your hotels facilities and the afternoon finding remote coves and beaches, hidden waterfalls and exploring Jurassic landscapes. You might even want to use your car to embark on a full day road trip, such as the' Road to Hana' on Maui. Start the day early so you get more time to stop off along the way, but the loop road can easily be driven in a day. Aim to be in Hana for lunch, so you can enjoy farm-to-table dining at Traavasa Hana and then continue onward to finish your day atop Haleakala where you can see the Mars-like dormant volcano, see the sun setting below the clouds and watch day turn to night and the sky light up with stars.

Hawaii Island is also recommended to be explored with a car, as you can take your time in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park driving the Crater Rim Drive, stopping off at look out points, walk through the Thurston Lava Tube and dine at The Rim restaurant at Volcano House. This unique hotel is located within the national park itself and highly recommended for an overnight stay as you can witness the fiery red glow from Halema'uma'u Crater.

Car rental is easy in the USA, all vehicles are automatic and you can choose to upgrade to a convertible or jeep so that you can enjoy the Hawaii sunshine whilst cruising the islands at your own pace.
