Modern Stylish Hotel

St. Albans, United Kingdom

We spent one night at the Modern. It is a stylish hotel which is located next to the Hilton Village and marina right at the start of Waikiki. The lobby is a bit dull but we had a warm reception and the porters are very friendly and efficient. We had a fairly average room with limited view to the sea but the bed was comfortable and it was a good size There is a very pleasant pool area and the breakfast which we had by the pool was very good indeed. My only negatives would be that the tour staff in the lobby were a bit pushy, and that after telling us our account was clear on checkout, they deducted tourist tax from our credit card after we had left.

Disappointing end to our holiday - service needs improvement

Melbourne, Australia

While this hotel definitely has potential with its lovely views and modern rooms, it falls short in terms of its service. I am usually a very generous reviewer when it comes to accommodation and it has been many years since I have given a rating this low. During our time at The Modern Honolulu, it was made clear to us that this hotel’s priority is making quick money from private events - and they are happy to compromise the experience of their paying guests in order to achieve this. A large event was on during our time here and as a result both the services and amenities suffered. Pool use was restricted, housekeeping were terribly understaffed and calls to guest services rung out. Waikiki is a tourist hotspot and as a result hotels have to be competitive. For the same price as The Modern Honolulu you can definitely get better value for your money with a hotel that prioritises its guests, provides better service and probably in a more central location too. The biggest disappointment of our stay at The Modern Honolulu was not being able to use either of the pools during our time here. The Modern Honolulu has a main pool and a small pool. During our only day at the hotel, the main pool was closed for a private function for the afternoon and evening and guests were advised to use the small pool instead. However, at the small pool they only provided 12 lounges - which is pretty insufficient for a hotel this large. I requested to have another lounge brought out so I had somewhere to lie, but was advised there wasn’t enough room. I’ve attached a photo - there clearly was. The actual closure is not my main issue though. My main issue is how it was dealt with by management and staff. Aside from the 12 lounge incident - it angers me that at no point in the booking process or in the lead up to our arrival were we notified that the pool would be closed during our stay. This is unfair, as I am sure this event was locked in months ago. We only found out about the closure after we had checked in, thanks to some signage next to the elevator (if there was a notice on their website then it must have been very discreet, because I couldn’t find it). Due to the staff’s focus being on the event, other areas of service suffered. Yoga was cancelled. The phone to guest services rang out twice when I tried to ask about getting an extra lounge chair by the pool. Housekeeping didn’t come until 2.30pm in the afternoon even though we had been out of our room since 7.30am (to make this worse, the staff actually tried to blame our irritation about this on us, saying that if we wanted an “early” service we should have asked... in what world is housekeeping before 2.30pm “early”?) Another irritation is that were told by reception when we checked in that we had a “welcome gift” waiting for us in our room. When we went up though, we couldn’t see anything that fit this description - just standard things like some bottled water and shampoo in the bathroom. When I called guest services to ask, the lady who answered said she didn’t know what reception was talking about - very strange! We did notice a lot of matching trays outside of people’s rooms later that night however with the same colourful empty drinks on them and little Prosecco bottles - I can only guess that maybe these drinks were the welcome gift and ours just never made it to us. There was also no information or hotel tour/rundown on arrival. We were pretty much given our key and shooed away. I am guessing this dismissiveness was due to how under the pump the staff were preparing for the event. Overall this hotel was very disappointing and the only negative part of an otherwise amazing trip to Hawaii. If you stay here, you run the risk of something similar happening to you - clearly The Modern Honolulu have no issue with depriving guests of amenities without warning. Events are the priority here so unless you’re lucky enough to be attending one, stay away.
