Beautiful Rooms & Property

Toronto, Canada

Travaasa Hana is easily the most unique, romantic, tranquil resort I've ever been to. My boyfriend and I spent one night here as we made our way along the Road to Hana. The property is absolutely stunning. The pool is spectacular - something out of a travel magazine. The coastline is a piece of rugged and gorgeous natural beauty right out of a calendar - if you're looking for a hotel right on a beach, this is probably not the hotel for you (although I think there is a shuttle that takes guests down the road to Hamoa Beach, which is a lovely white sand beach on a pretty cove - we drove there on our own after we had checked out). The bed was one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in! The room decor is stylish and beachy-chic. The sunrise and sunset here were exceptional. The grounds are PERFECTLY manicured - huge sweeping lawns of lush, trimmed grass with pretty gardens and tropical flowers everywhere you turn. Make sure you make the hike to the red sand beach at Kaihalulu, which you can access just off-property by taking a path on the right side of a field by the Hana Community Center, right beside the entrance gate to the hotel. This beach is absolutely stunning and is a must-do if you're in Hana. The bathroom was gorgeous, with a lovely shower and giant bath tub. We arrived and were met with a personalized note and complimentary banana bread, which was a nice touch. The room coffee was excellent, and the fridge kept our beers cold. The hotel has a long list of daily activities (although most of the more active activities come with an extra charge). I'm only giving 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons - I had booked an "Ocean Bungalow" 1 king room for $890 CAD, described as "Private, expansive lanais with views of the Pacific Ocean". I had thought we would be ocean front, but there was a row of cottages in front of us. The villas are staggered, so we could still see the ocean from our balcony, but I thought (and was comfortable booking at $890 a night) we were in one of the villas in front of us, which were right up against the ocean. The hotel could manage expectations a little better by making this clear. The other issue with having a row of villas right in front of you is privacy - since there is a laneway for access to the oceanfront villas, staff and other guests get an unobstructed view of your balcony and a nice view of your room if you have the blinds open (which you need to do to appreciate any view). I wandered out onto my balcony in my bathrobe to take in the sunrise, and came face to face with someone walking down the laneway to the parking lot. Oops! I would not call our villa "private". The other reason for 4/5 is that the room did not come with the service and creature comforts I would expect. We called to request two sets of cutlery be delivered, and waited for 15 minutes while our Thai food from off-property cooled. No one ended up bringing it at all. We just ended up sharing our meal with the one coffee spoon that came with the room. It's a minor point (and we could have called the front desk to follow up) but providing cutlery on arrival to match the number of guests, or ensuring delivery when requested, would have matched the expectations of luxury that came with the price tag. Likewise, I had difficulties reaching the activities coordinator when I was trying to book an excursion - I called the front desk (no answer), then called the front desk again and was forwarded to the activities coordinator (who didn't answer). I called the activities coordinator directly (no answer; left a voicemail). I called the front desk, mentioned I was having difficulties reaching the activities coordinator, and was finally successfully connected. No harm done; just more legwork than I would have expected. That said, I would absolutely go back, and would recommend Travaasa Hana to anyone looking for a beautiful stop on the road to Hana. I wish we had more time to explore it and enjoy the property.

Never going back!!

Copenhagen, Denmark

Where should I start!?!?! My fiancé and I just checked out from this resort and I am the happiest man in the world - not because we still have 14 days left in Hawai‘i - not because we had the most fantastic lunch at Bruddah Hutts in Hana - NO because I do not have to spend a single second in this resort again. We arrived Saturday afternoon and had booked a room with sea view - and we were looking forward to spending three relaxing days in peaceful Hana! Unfortunately - something different met us! The room we were given only had garden view. We went back to the reception and showed our booking confirmation that clearly stated ocean view. The receptionist (who had a extremely bad attitude and NO sense of customer service) reacted very surprisingly by standing up and saying “I do not have time for this” (and there were no other guest in the reception and even an extra receptionist). I said to my fiancé, that we could try to check the availability at the hotel we came from, who gave us a great service and stay. The receptionist reaction to that was “Yes - please do so”. I was speechless - where were the peaceful Hana. If it had not been for the 2 hours drive back to civilization - I wouldn’t have stayed. Spending 800$ per night - you expect at least a good service. We had breakfast once - where the oak meal was cold, the chia bowl was overdue, and the omelet was made with mushrooms from a can (at least it tasted like it). Travaasa clearly take the full advantage of being the only hotel in Hana. Price and quality do not match! I could tell more “funny” experiences, but they are smaller examples of how a little extra effort would have a significant better costumer experience. I can highly recommend to visit Hana - but do not bother to stay at Travaasa.
