Los Angeles, California

Of the 4 places we stayed on the Big Island, this was my least favorite. It is huge beyond belief. There are basically 3 hotel buildings, with 1,113 rooms and suites, the hotel lobby, and a conference center distributed along a ~1 mile curve. It was 0.4 miles from check-in to our room in the building between the conference center and the last hotel building. It was also 0.4 miles from our room to our breakfast table. There are 2 trams that shuttle people back and forth between the buildings, but only one tram operates before 9 am, so you might need to wait at least 15 minutes. When 2 are operating, the maximum wait is probably more like 7 - 10. Our room was fine, but not as nice as the Mauna Lani, but we didn't pay as much. They do have a fantastic oriental art collection along the 0.4 mile hallway, and presumably all of the 1 mile curve. Most of the pieces are very good reproductions, but there are a lot of originals.

A surprise trip and so relaxing. Hotel is big with a lot of things to see and do without leaving the resort area. Got to interact with dolphins. Sea turtles swam in the lagoon. Plenty of chairs by each of the pools. Tram and boats to get you from one side of the resort to the other, even when there was issues with the tram, they added another boat so the wait time wasn't long. Several restaurants with nice menu selections. Loved the luau.
