Quite a disappointment

Buenos Aires, Argentina

I have travelled to many 5 stars hotels in numerous countries and from the comments found in internet I was quite excited to stay at the Setai. However, I did not find anything special at all in this property. I arrived with a rented car and did not feel particularly welcome by the valet service when I reached the hotel. In addition, the area where you leave the car is small and get jammed quickly. There is a whole area under construction next to the hotel entrance which does not help to make things look nice. The staff at reception and concierge were nice and helpful which unfortunately was not the case at breakfast in the courtyard the first day. The courtyard area looks quite nice but was not very pleasant to stay in. Quite warm and very windy. On the first day I arrived, at 5.30 pm my daughter felt like having a chocolate dessert. I went to the courtyard restaurant where I was told that there was only 3 sweets on the menu and none with chocolate. Great choice of food! I then took her to the beach restaurant where I was told that the kitchen closes at 5pm and the bar at 6pm so no chocolate treat and forget about having a nice drink outside at sunset. Quite incredible but true! Access to the the pools, beach bar and beach is through a fairly narrow alley which is not a dream path either. There are 3 identical swimming pools next to each other but I did not find them particularly attractive, stuck between a huge tower and the beach restaurant building. I had booked 2 rooms, one with city view and the other one with courtyard. Both were large and comfortable. Given the difference in price I would certainly recommend that you go for the courtyard view as the city view one is rather a no view room - I was on the 6th floor out of 7 and the only thing I could see was the building opposite the road. One last thing: one morning, my wife did not feel well and she decided to have breakfast in the room. Although our rate included breakfast she was charged the full and excessive price of 60usd for having it in the room. I can accept an extra charge for room service but charging for the full breakfast twice is unacceptable and in so many years of travel it is only the second time it happens to me. When I complained at check out I was just told “sorry, it is the hotel policy”. Great customer care! In view of all the above and my travel experience, I think that this hotel is not only much too overpriced but also that it lacks atmosphere. What you get for usd 800 per night is a comfortable room with little view in a hotel which may have had something special a couple of years ago but not any longer. Anticipating another stay in Miami in the near future, I looked at other hotels nearby and must say that the Delano and the SLS which are a bit better located in my opinion have a lot more atmosphere, good vibes and great restaurants. I have not seen the rooms though.
