Nice one

I booked Hotel Zelos because of a recommendation of a friend and was not disappointed. The hotel is centrally located, you can explore SF by foot or the nearby cable car. I liked the area, very lively with lots of restaurants. Downstairs is a Trader Joe's supermarket which has healthy food alternatives for a quick bite. I must say, the rooms were not the most modern and might soon require a makeover. Also, technology wise its cool to have speakers with an iPhone dock available but who still has the old 30 pin socket? Nevertheless I liked the flair of the hotel. The breakfast room is very nice - dark leather couches and a la carte breakfast. Excellent omlette, good coffee, friendly staff.

Great hotel, non-existent customer service

I've stayed at the Zelos exclusively on my last 4 trips to SF - but will no longer after a recent experience. The hotel and front desk staff have always been wonderful - but the way that the hotel reservation team handled (or rather, didn't) recent feedback gives me concerns around the Zelos' care for the experience of its customers. I booked a trip at the Zelos for June 11-14. Unfortunately, on the 10th I discovered I needed to shift my trip to June 12-15 - the same duration - just arriving and departing one day later. I called the reservation line listed in my confirmation email and spoke to a representative who informed me that this was a cancellation and I would be charged for the first night, since I was within the 48 hour window for cancellations - but they would be able to accomodate my additional night if I wanted. This seemed wrong to me - on the few times I've needed to do this in the past, I've been able to simply pay for the night I stayed. I pushed a bit but was told that any removal of a night from a reservation was considered a cancellation - even if the reservation duration did not change. I found cheaper accommodation for the last night of my trip and resolved to bring the matter up on check-in. The representative I spoke with on the phone told me she would put a note in so the room would not be cancelled after I failed to arrive the first night. When arriving on the 12th - my reservation had been cancelled - that note had not been placed in the reservation. The front desk staff was able to rebook me thankfully - and told me to follow up with my concerns with the central reservation team. On the Zelos website, there were two email addresses listed for for contact ([email protected] and [email protected]). I emailed both asking for clarification as to why I was unable to make this change and adding a refund for the first night would be a nice touch as well. That was June 15. I emailed again June 21. I did not receive a single reply from anyone affiliated with the Zelos or the Viceroy Hotel Group - however I did receive 4 automated emails since my stay asking me to make a public review. So, here's that public review. Please Zelos/Viceroy - bring the level of customer responsiveness up to the same standard of quality that your hotel is at.
