Difficult to Surpass

Al Muharraq, Bahrain

It has been about a decade since I first stayed at the Lodge, it was excellent then, all the years in-between, and was excellent this last stay. The staff is perfect and genuinely always happy to be there, very helpful. The space itself has a lost a bit of its sleepiness over the years as the visitor center has grown and sitting in one’s room on the balcony overlooking 18 you’ll see throngs of tourists who spilled out of buses walk to 18 for a picture. It feels a bit less special, but one can’t fault the company for that, their water bill increases exponentially every year. The biggest and only disappointment about the Lodge was one that was out of their control (or maybe not but I “get it”), the fact that the wood fireplaces have been removed from the rooms. To me, as someone who played the courses many times and lived in the area for a period of time...coming back to The Lodge, sitting with the doors open to 18 while yet in front of your own wood burning fireplace was always a highlight. I heard the wildfires used as an excuse, maybe it is insurance, who knows but I was unaware and was disappointed upon opening the door and seeing they were now gas (well, mine wasn’t converted yet and I had no fireplace at all.) Even the ones in the main room of The Lodge are now gas. I stated earlier that it has been about a decade since my first trip, that wasn’t for bragging but some insight. If one is coming out for the golf and golf alone, January or February is a great time. The course is set up for the Pro-Am and plays wonderfully. Even more special (referencing the decade ago and now this year) is that they are already setting it up for the Open. Sure the winter and early spring is a roll of the dice with weather but you’ll love sitting back during the Open in June watching the boys play the same course you played with the same set up. Tips for the novice: -Come before a tournament so the course is at its best. Get a caddy (Mark Benjamin and Giles are favorites) and walk. -You have to walk. -Spyglass over Spanish Bay but Spanish Bay gets dumped on by golf intelligentsia, in my opinion it is unwarranted and a wonderful course for play, for views it is also hard to beat. -Utilize the Beach and Tennis Club, the local members are nice, the hot tub and pool that hang right over Stillwater Cover, as well as a dip in the cove (even in the winter, gotta do it) is a great post round stop. -Never saw the bagpiper at Spanish, most do. I guess it is fine but we’re in America, I’ll listen to the pipes across the Atlantic. –If you’re of fair complexion and not familiar with California, you will get sunburn even if you are cold on the course, beware. Woodburning fireplace aside, I don’t even know why I am writing this. Everyone knows Pebble. Bandon is great as is Streamsong, Sea Isle and Pinehurst, but nothing compares to Pebble Beach. No matter how much it costs, even if you have a mild interest in golf, your life will be of less worth if you haven’t stayed and played at The Lodge; You can’t take your softball league games to Yankee Stadium or Fenway but you can do that very thing in golf. This last trip my brother and I took our father, it was his first time. Every day since it is the first thing he talks about in our conversations.
