Ants, mod, and serious lack of caring.

carmel

We checked in and they tried to charge us (more than we booked for) even though we pre-paid. Took a while but they got it straight. In the room we had ants everywhere. They eventually ended up in our suitcase, cars, and now our kids home. Argh. We had ordered a special birthday cake for a friend, that ended up being covered in ants before we could eat it. We took the plastic wrap off and asked for it to go to the kitchen to be kept while they got rid of the ants. However, they never did get rid of the ants just did some housekeeping and sprayed the outside of the door. We got the cake back two days later and they had not been able to find a box or even find plastic wrap for it. In fact, they asked “what happened to the plastic wrap we gave you?”. Um, it was covered in ants. FYI- the shower Had a blAck mold issue. I was asked if I had mentioned it to anyone. Again, um...yes...but we were a little too busy dealing with all the ants to bother with the mold. Serious lack of empathy or caring on the part of the staff. They just said they were sorry we had ants and mold everywhere. Did not offer to switch rooms or anything. Not the best birthday hotel. In fact, I would never recommend this hotel to anyone. I used+to live in the area and always suggested it to visitors. My mistake. Unless you like ants, mold, and a staff that truly does not care, I would go to Bernardus Hotel.

Casual, personal luxury

We spent a week with a large family group at this wonderful place. I rarely, if ever, develop an emotional feeling of belonging at a resort, but did here. The place itself is gorgeous, fresh, clean and uplifting; and the hotel decor/design itself is just right: not trying too hard or outdated. The food feels local and I never got the 'wish I hadn't eaten that' holiday food feeling (even at good places). But what stood out daily (which means its not a production) is that the staff are REAL people, who felt really happy with being there and generative with guests. The management knew just how to do things for us so we felt cared for, cosy and at ease. More than a real holiday.
