Nightmare !

Belgium

My wife had been asking me several times to try this hotel. She has experienced it with her mother few years back when it was under Banyan Tree brand and she really was amazed by the scenery, the animals and the amazing resort. While talking to other friends, who had recently stayed in this hotel, we started to be worried as it seems their experiences were not positive at all. Nevertheless, someone's experience can differ and we thought we will not let that influence our choice. We stayed in this hotel during the month of June 2018 and unfortunately the stay was not at the level of a 5-star hotel. When we arrived, I requested for a room in a corner, so that we ensure other guests are not overlooking into our swimming pool. The receptionist informed me that we can get such room at an extra cost normally but they will extend it complimentary to us as an exception. We were really pleased about that and were looking forward to it. As it was not the room allocated to us, the receptionist offered us to wait at the main restaurant while the room is being prepared for us and informed us that it will take about 20 minutes to have it ready and that they will come and pick us up from the restaurant. 40 minutes later we were still waiting for someone from Front office. We then decided to go back to reception to find out what the delay was. We had there 5 different people from front office asking us if they can assist us (and no solution) while we were waiting for the receptionist to find out the reason of the delay and we were attacked by flies while seating. Flies everywhere! I understand that we are in the middle of the desert but there are solutions to keep the flies somehow away from the indoor reception. there were lines of dead flies on the couches and near the windows. A more senior front office member informed us that the room will be ready in 5 minutes. He then came back one minute later to tell us that Housekeeping told him now that it will be 10 minutes. We had been offered a late check-out on the next day at 5pm to make it up for the wait on our first day and we appreciated the gesture. 20 minutes later and after starting to lose our cool, the Duty Manager took us with the buggy to our room. When we arrived in the room, we had to laugh in order not to cry. A massive dirty net was covering the view to the beautiful desert. We wanted privacy but we don't come all the way to the desert and not enjoy the beautiful view this resort has to offer. The Duty Manager has taken action to change us rooms and we had to wait for 15 minutes again until we are taken to the second villa. When we arrive in the second villa everything seemed lovely, until my wife looked into the pool. The color was completely yellow and you could not see through. We had to ask the duty manager again to change us the room. The excuse was that, as the room has not been used for a long time, the water had stagnated apparently (such resort runs on 100% occupancy every weekend). We had to wait again another 15 minutes to be taken to our final villa. We arrived in the resort at 2pm and we managed to get into our private pool at 4:15pm. What a trip! The Duty manager tells that he would have loved to offer us an upgrade to a tented villa but they were all occupied. If the hotel is not able to provide that, don't mention it! we didn't ask for it. We thought that all the troubles were behind us and we were wrong. I wanted to have a coffee and use the coffee machine available, it was not working as the coffee machine had a European plug and the wall was a UK plug. there was no adapter. So I called housekeeping that gave me an adapter but both plug where not providing electricity so I had to call them in order to fix that (which they did while we went to the restaurant). There was suddenly no water in the bathroom when I wanted to take a bath. I called engineering and suddenly a brown colored water came in all the sinks and shower and it stayed that way until the next day. The bathtub clogged and more dirt came out of it. I had to call the engineering team again. The next morning, we wanted to call a buggy to go to breakfast with the phones in the rooms, they were not working. My wife had to call the reception with her mobile phone. We decided to enjoy the pool and once we were in it, we realized that housekeeping had taken away our towels but had not replaced them. We had to call them and they arrived 2 hours later (by then we already had used the towels in the bathroom). We sat on the edge of the pool to tan but moved very quickly when we saw that the wall of the pool was infested of bugs which were coming into the pool. The terrace near the pool is covered of birds feces on all the pillars. Privacy is protected between villas with tented poles, in our case one was completely missing and the other one was teared. We decided to leave the hotel at 12pm despite having a late check-out at 5pm. We preferred to be in our home than to spend one more minute into this place. We were so disappointed as we were looking forward to some time together. We have received an apology from the management of the hotel and we were invited to come back to the hotel anytime to experience the true Ritz Carlton service. When my wife asked to come back the following weekend (we stayed from a Friday to a Saturday), our request was refused and we were asked to come during the week or on a Saturday evening, it would be better for them. When you pay more than 650 USD per night, this is completely unacceptable. We will never go back.
