Paradise Lost

Grays Thurrock, United Kingdom

Where to start? If you have read the previous reviews you will see they are mixed and quite a few comment on the need for investment and maintenance. Those specific comments are accurate, but there are other fundamental issues that need to be addressed. The manager, Vinod Bajaj, is, I fear, firefighting, by trying to keep the central core of the hotel - the reception, eating areas and main pool - in reasonable shape, whilst all around him the place is gradually deteriorating. While we were there various individuals were being wooed in the hope of attracting investment. I hope he succeeds as this hotel has the potential to be a great resort, but time is limited as the Sandals Group are meant to be building a large new hotel at Buccoo Reef soon and that will surely see the collapse of the Magdalena's customer base. Some web pages describe this as a 'new'hotel. It isn't. It used to be the Hilton Scarborough, but they sold out and the government took over. Up to 4 years ago this was a thriving and busy establishment, but it is now a shadow of itself due to lack of investment and maintenance. I have posted various pictures here that reflect the current condition of various parts of the hotel. Many of the issues could be fixed relatively quickly and cheaply. For example, broken or missing tiles should be replaced. Rotten and termite damaged wooden railings around satellite pools ought to be repaired. Broken glass screens could be fixed. Damaged lights around the paths should be removed or replaced. A light in one of the satellite pools has fallen out of its fixing and that and the electrical cable are in the water. One of the filters in the main pool is missing a cover and is a H&S hazard. Coconuts on some of the palm trees must be removed as they are a risk to passers by and those using secondary pools. A broken metal mast on the roof is hanging off. There are various electric cables exposed in the grounds and on certain walls - hopefully not live, but who knows? The website boasts of having ice making machines on each floor. I only found one and it was out of order - all the rest had been removed and the electrical wiring was hanging out of the walls. The website has pictures of suites that clients can use, with their own spa baths on the balcony. Trust me - you would not want to use them as they are covered in rust, mould and dirt. I doubt these rooms are currently available - some seem to be in the process of being repainted, but the spa baths appear beyond saving - see the pictures. We had a deluxe sea view room - in reality all the rooms have a sea view and this room couldn't be descibed as deluxe. The bed linen and towels were changed regularly, but the tiled flooring had clearly not been washed in a long time and the toilet had a ring of limescale around it that had been there for a very long time. I have never walked out of a shower into a bedroom and found my feet were dirty due to lack of floor cleaning. There is an ant problem - tiny micro ants find their way in and will swarm over anything remotely sweet, including fruit, cough medicine, crisps, etc. I found a quick blast of Jungle Formula (for mosquitos) wiped them out. They are harmless but very annoying. There are four places to eat - the bar, which has a typical fried fish / burger and chips menu. Disappointingly, this never stays open beyond 10:30 pm, so if you fancy a nice relaxing evening with a cool drink then you are out of luck. The buffet restaurant is called Pembois and this is the only place that has any variety in it's menu, when it is open, which was not all the time during our stay. The Salaka Grill near the pool offers a fixed menu for lunch and evening meals and never changed during the two weeks we were there. And the Kali'na is meant to be the upmarket eatery, but, again, has a very limited menu and incredibly limited wine selection - not that you would notice from the wine menu! The website refers to a Tavaco Lounge - this is basically a second bar and looks nothing like the pictures on the webpage. It was deserted during our stay and only opened when the main Robinson Crusoe Bar was shut. The Benné Café is located just outside of the main hotel entrance and was never open while we were there, so I've not included it as an eating option. If you have food allergies then be very careful as nothing is labelled to show what it contains and my wife was regularly served food with gluten in, even though we pre-warned the management and staff. Your food choice will be even more limited, too, if you have allergies as there is no concept of innovation to provide alternatives for clients who cannot eat what is available, although having said that my wife was once offered baked coconut and shark for breakfast, but declined! There are simple alternatives that could be made available but no will to do so. If you are looking for entertainment, then there is none to be found. One evening we had a trio of local women singers, who were very good, but they arrived at 9.30 and were gone within the hour. Then there was a karaoke night - oh dear! There is no club room with games or other things to do. The toilets in the public areas are not fit for purpose - some are locked off and leaking. There are missing seats and doors with no locks and holes in the door where they were. The saving grace of this hotel is its staff who are are all welcoming, friendly and engaging. So, I have to mention Minerva Cupid, Susan (Ria), Lamaine James, Kachief Rowley from the bar staff. Kiev, Carla and Pamela from the kitchen and restaurants. There were many more whose names I failed to note who helped our holiday go with a smile. Now - I'm not saying don't go to the Magdalena. If you want a quiet holiday on a beautiful island then just lower your expectations a bit, (maybe a lot). Hopefully they will get their act together soon. I did hear a rumour that the Marriott Group might be making a bid - let's hope so. Some people have complained about the wind from the Atlantic - honestly, it's a relief from the heat and humidity, so that's the least of your problems. There are tea/coffee making facilities in your room, but no fresh milk. We took the hotel cab to the local mall and supermarket and bought milk which we kept in our fridge. You may want to consider taking your own tea bags - ours ran out early on and weren't immediately replaced. The fridge seemed to be the only place the ants couldn't find a way into. The hotel taxi service is very efficient and will take you wherever you want to go, including on an all day trip round the island. There is a free minibus to Pigeon Point beach that leaves about 10:00 and picks you up again at 4:30 pm. I haven't put up any pictures of the pool, beach etc, as there are plenty of them - mine focus on the less attractive side of things not shown in the brochure or on the misleading website. Enjoy!
