Struggling for the 5th star

Ok, where to start. Booked this hotel for 14 days as per reviews looking good. This hotel is huge with 3 different pools, family, infinity pools 14+ and 16+( that doesn’t stop the kids going everywhere with their parents, which I find it disturbing as the stuff are going to soft when it comes to following the rules). The design is at its best and unique(really well done there). The beach is near the hotel, altought nothing special with it and never used it. There are bars, restaurants and masseuse everywhere there shouting after you. Now lets go back to the hotel. You got plenty of facilities and activities inside the hotel and you don’t really need to go outside unless you want to go on a trip. Everything inside its at a good quality comparing to the outside. Altought really expensive for what they offer and the 10% included service + 7% tax(never seen before) its a real rip off, as the stuff always looking to tip them some more, as they don’t really get it(its a huge share between everyone). Our room was lovely and big and it has been cleaned everyday, even 2 times a day at a high standard with everything refilled. There are some minuses when it comes to the rooms. Altought you are at a 5 star hotel that doesn’t mean you have to do everything for us, as an extra charge. There is no iron, no toilet brush(i find it embarassing to call the reception to come and clean my toilet), not a single cutlery, in case you want to buy a fruit and cut it yourself. Another real big minus about the rooms its the stinky water that comes from everywhere, sinks, shower and toilet. I would recomend to use it just for the shower even tho its feels like taking a bath into the lake. This is really unacceptable for a 5 stars hotel. Lets go the dining areas. I will start with the room service which is the same with the Tin mine. Room service(which I used the most) was always a great choice and never dissapointed with good timing and hot food). Tin mine, the area where everyone takes breakfast and the place for a dinner its a good choice as well. Breakfast has been very good with a huge variety of food to serve and after 14 days still didn’t find it borring, fast table clearing and always welcome with a smile. Tin mine at dinner does well altought slow, confused service and english is spoken and understood here and there. Underground cafe has been very dissapointing for me. Bad food quality and random service. The refills with drinks for pool 3 was good and fast with Ian and Nas nearby( Special mention to Ian, a friendly and kind person that does his job properly with passion and fast service.. One of the few members that deserve a promotion( thank you Ian). Rebar and Rivet, unfortunatelly tried only Rebar 2 times for Morrocan nights as the japanesse food its not on my taste. Really great food for a bar and friendly service. Good selection of cocktails. The Black Ginger really dissapointed with bad service, but that I wrote in a separate review. The bar Tongkah(something) has plenty of activities and has a really good service. Its well maintain and the food is great(don’t miss the happy hour from 17:00-18:00, for plenty of drinks). The hotel its very clean and well maintain by the huge variety of staff they have. If you wake up early in the morning you will notice the people that does the hard work behind the scene. Brushing all the alleys, cleaning the pools, maintain the flowers and trees around etc. The reception area its mostly of the time full with staff, always welcoming you with a smile and ready to help. Special mention only to one person from the reception for being such a kind and helpfull person. Her name is Kiara( thank you very much Kiara). A minus that I found while walking on the alleys its that there is only few bins around. You will find yourself walking with the trash around looking for a bin. Most of the staff in the hotel don’t speak english, but they try their best in a nice way. Some staff are kind and polite and some are arogant and ignorant, most of them looking for a tip, only few of them actually working for it. The guys from the gates are always polite and very well educated. You will never find yourself opening that door, even at a late our. The gym, which I used it several times its small, but there are plenty of activities you can do with high quality equipment, a studio and even a tennis court. You got plenty of facilities there also. I really enjoyed this gym. As a conclusion I would rate this hotel as a 4+ stars, really strugling for the 5th, yet no deserved from my vision. Not to be missed the trips from the hotel for Phi Phi island, atv for 2 hours and elephant sanctuary. Really good! I hope you will find my review helpfull as I would like to read the same before I go somewhere.

Excellent service, awesome rooms but let down by the smell of the water

I booked a stay at The Slate during low season and it was really worth the money. The resort is beautiful and the rooms are stunning. Service was excellent. The only real drawback is its location. It is not really near anywhere other than the airport. So if you are planning to stay there, either stay in all the way or rent a car from the airport and drive yourself around Phuket. That said, the water in the pipes smell funky, like the pipes have rusted. I had to change room once (got upgraded) but the smell still persisted. I would recommend management to do something about it because the smell was so off-putting I didn't feel like using the bathtub.
