Spectacular resort inspired by Thai mythology

Nestled in glorious greenery, Keemala aims to transport their guests to a mythical world where a fantasy-like construction of bungalows perches on the hills of Kamala.  Only a short drive from Patong beach, Keemala is like no other resort on Phuket, due to its architecture and experiences on offer.

The pool villas come in four separate styles - clay and straw cottages, tent villas, tree houses and bird's nest villas - each one representing a clan of fictitious early Phuket settlers: Pa-ta-Pea’ (Earth), the ‘Khon-Jorn’ (Wanderers), the ‘We-Ha’ (Sky), and the ‘Rung-Nok’ (Nest) people.

The Mala Spa has eight pod-like treatment rooms scattered in the gardens – this serene oasis offers traditional Thai Therapies alongside more unusual remedies like raindrop healing and energy re-balancing and integrative bodywork. The hotel offers a holistic activity schedule with daily yoga, Thai boxing, aqua Thai Chi, circuit conditioning, holistic nutrition, meditation and much more.

Keemala has just one restaurant – Su Tha – which serves a delectable Thai, international and Indian cuisine. Meals can also be taken in your room or by the pool if you would prefer a change of scenery.

Part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Keemala is the perfect place for honeymooners, couples and families wishing to get away from it all whilst making it as busy or relaxed as you wish.

Disappointing in some aspects

Hampshire, United Kingdom

Keemala offers a unique experience in quirky accommodation which is its main attraction. We came with great expectations based on other reviews, so wanting to love and be wowed by the place, but left rather disappointed. Yes the tented villa was unique and made for a relaxing and luxury stay with lots of fun little extras, but some basic aspects were distinctly below par for the price we paid. Beware if you come here looking for a tranquil stay for romance and privacy - there are better places if that's what you want. Keemala is up on a hill not that far from Kamala Beach resort and you can see buildings all below. It is not that great a view. There is road noise and you will hear the call for prayer from the mosque several times a day (starting at 5am!). Also because it is spread out and hilly, the staff use a fleet of golf buggies to get around to transport guests and service the villas. Thus these are constantly backwards and forwards in front of the villas and can cause a disturbance. I know all this is necessary but I just want to make others aware. Being British we rarely complain but after the second morning's breakfast service felt the need to speak to the manager. It was never that busy at breakfast but the staff were just not on top of things. Tables were left uncleared and several times we had to ask for cutlery (or take it from a neighbouring empty table). Second courses would be served and the dirty dishes from the first left at the table. The last straw was when we asked for the missing sauces to go with our waffles and the waiter took the half used ones from another empty table! Definitely not the 5* service we expected and simple things that easily be improved with some training. We did speak to the manager and there was clearly more effort by the staff the next day. Saying all this the food at breakfast was stunning and we actually felt sorry for the chefs who were let down by inferior front of house. Cleanliness in the villa could have been better. Mirrors in the bathroom were dusty, the door to the outside shower had age old water marks on it and you could barely see through it. The netted tenting over the bed had tears in it. In general the staff were all lovely but it was just not the exceptional experience we were hoping for.

Incredible stay

Toronto, Canada

The best and most beautiful place I have ever stayed at (Treehouse Villa). It was our splurge stay for the last night on our honeymoon... and it was worth it. Food was delicious and comparable to North America pricing ($30 dinner for two people without drinks). We ordered room service to enjoy in our room and had lunch the next day at the restaurant. This was the best and plentiful option free breakfast I have ever seen. It was such a unique experience! Staff was so sweet and nice. I felt like a celebrity or a queen. The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable and we were dying at how stylish and unique the room looked. Our private pool was a tad on the cooler side... so would have preferred a little warmer water but maybe it was just cooler in Phuket than usual. Nice views from our room and all around but couldn't see the water from our room. We got a later checkout by 1:00pm for our honeymoon and then we hit the pool (which was also great lounge spot). They also exceeded our expectations by booking us a shower room in the spa since we had already checked out. The private shower room is part of the spa and is also a steam room... We just expected a shower stall in a public bathroom (which they did also have near the pool).

Room Types

Tent Pool Villa

The tent pool villas are a reflection of the ‘Khon-Jorn’ clan’s adventurous nature - foragers, herders, traders and explorers.

Filled with textures inspired by the clans lifestyle, each tent-like-structure has a luxurious canopied master bed, oak furniture and varnished wooden floors. The huge master bedroom leads through sliding glass doors onto the infinity pool and lounge beds outside – there’s also a spectacular view over Kamala bay.

Tree Pool House

The “We-ha” people lived in homes suspended from trees, and worshipped the universe. This is the fictional story that inspired the design of the Tree Pool House.

You will have an enormous 169 square metres of spectacular living space, laid out over two floors. The interiors of the seven Tree Pool Houses incorporate suspended furniture and cocoon-like beds and loungers.

The Tree House's offer rain forest and resort views, as well as having a spacious bathroom with an immense monsoon shower, outside shower, guest washroom and a stand-alone bathtub. Complete with a private pool and outdoor sun terrace, this really is a very special place.

Clay Pool Cottage 1 Bedroom

The Clay Pool Villas are set lower down in the forest and offer beautiful views over the surrounding nature. Inspired by the culture of the ‘Pa-Ta-Pea’ clan, who were farmers, gardeners and carpenters, the interiors are sleek and luxurious, with furniture being made from wood and other natural materials.

Take a dip in your private pool, or simply chill out on your poolside terrace and listen to the sounds of the forest.
