Keemala

Spectacular resort inspired by Thai mythology

Nestled in glorious greenery, Keemala aims to transport their guests to a mythical world where a fantasy-like construction of bungalows perches on the hills of Kamala.  Only a short drive from Patong beach, Keemala is like no other resort on Phuket, due to its architecture and experiences on offer.

The pool villas come in four separate styles - clay and straw cottages, tent villas, tree houses and bird's nest villas - each one representing a clan of fictitious early Phuket settlers: Pa-ta-Pea’ (Earth), the ‘Khon-Jorn’ (Wanderers), the ‘We-Ha’ (Sky), and the ‘Rung-Nok’ (Nest) people.

The Mala Spa has eight pod-like treatment rooms scattered in the gardens – this serene oasis offers traditional Thai Therapies alongside more unusual remedies like raindrop healing and energy re-balancing and integrative bodywork. The hotel offers a holistic activity schedule with daily yoga, Thai boxing, aqua Thai Chi, circuit conditioning, holistic nutrition, meditation and much more.

Keemala has just one restaurant – Su Tha – which serves a delectable Thai, international and Indian cuisine. Meals can also be taken in your room or by the pool if you would prefer a change of scenery.

Part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Keemala is the perfect place for honeymooners, couples and families wishing to get away from it all whilst making it as busy or relaxed as you wish.

Treehouse hotel

On arrival we were a bit surprised by how built up the villas were but then again we live in a time of good angles for picture taking. Our disappointment was soon elevated with a drink and cold towel whilst we waited for our room. The room was beautiful the products in the room all smelt divine and all organic with one of the best bath tubs I gave ever seen. There was a great attention to detail in the room and even being in a jungle there were no bugs in the room. The butler service was a great touch and nothing was too much to get. The main pool in the hotel was also beautiful including the swim up bar. The pool area was empty for most of our 3 night stay so we managed to make full use of it. The spa was also incredible and I would highly recommend a treatment. Of course you can go elsewhere for cheaper but that is not the point in staying here. Our absolute highlight of the trip was the food. I have never seen a menu so geared up to gluten free, dairy free and vegan food. The staff were also so knowledgable which put me at ease with my ordering of food. I am still dreaming of the gluten free waffles that they served for breakfast. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and special thanks to Mai our host and the restaurant staff who made us feel very welcome.

Overhyped

London

Don't be taken in by the hype or misled by the promotional photo's. I guess we were expecting a setting similar to the beautiful place we stayed in Ubud, which gave on to unbroken greenery and river rapids below, and not another single rooftop visible from anywhere about the hotel. The Keemala, by contrast, looks down on large, concrete, apartment blocks, car parks and the scruffy rooftops of Kamala. When your initial impression is one of huge disappointment, you start to look for other things to moan about. We stayed in a Clay House, one of the four types of individual, quirky properties, with some bizarre design features. There were two sets of doors and two sets of steps between the bedroom and bathroom, so you had to leave the light on to avoid breaking your neck when going to the loo during the night. There were two showers, one indoor and one huge and redundant outdoor, but only one sunbed on the decking. There was no wardrobe or wall mirror in the bedroom, and no AC in the bathroom area. The only hanging space was an open rail in the bathroom, so by the time you'd dried your hair, dressed in slightly damp clothes and applied make-up, you were ready for another shower. However, a nice touch was that all the soft drinks in the bedroom minibar were complimentary. The smart, modern gym was full of high-end equipment. The attractive, free-form infinity pool had a swim-up bar, and was fed by a fall of water. However, there was only space for seven pairs of sunbeds for fifty bungalows. We did enjoy our stay here, but was glad it was only two days in the middle of our trip to Thailand. When you boil it down, the only issues that would stop returning would be the view and the price.

Room Types

Tent Pool Villa

The tent pool villas are a reflection of the ‘Khon-Jorn’ clan’s adventurous nature - foragers, herders, traders and explorers.

Filled with textures inspired by the clans lifestyle, each tent-like-structure has a luxurious canopied master bed, oak furniture and varnished wooden floors. The huge master bedroom leads through sliding glass doors onto the infinity pool and lounge beds outside – there’s also a spectacular view over Kamala bay.

Tree Pool House

The “We-ha” people lived in homes suspended from trees, and worshipped the universe. This is the fictional story that inspired the design of the Tree Pool House.

You will have an enormous 169 square metres of spectacular living space, laid out over two floors. The interiors of the seven Tree Pool Houses incorporate suspended furniture and cocoon-like beds and loungers.

The Tree House's offer rain forest and resort views, as well as having a spacious bathroom with an immense monsoon shower, outside shower, guest washroom and a stand-alone bathtub. Complete with a private pool and outdoor sun terrace, this really is a very special place.

Clay Pool Cottage 1 Bedroom

The Clay Pool Villas are set lower down in the forest and offer beautiful views over the surrounding nature. Inspired by the culture of the ‘Pa-Ta-Pea’ clan, who were farmers, gardeners and carpenters, the interiors are sleek and luxurious, with furniture being made from wood and other natural materials.

Take a dip in your private pool, or simply chill out on your poolside terrace and listen to the sounds of the forest.
